Disney confirms Star Wars anthology movie for 2020

Disney chief executive Bob Iger has confirmed that another entry in the Star Wars series of stand-alone “anthology” movies is set for release in 2020.

In remarks made to the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, and reported by Deadline, Iger said that a writer had been hired to work on the film. This would be the third in the series that will begin with the release of the Gareth Edwards-directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December 2016, and followed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s as yet untitled Han Solo film, due for release in May 2018.

No details have yet emerged of the 2020 project.

Joss Whedon Wants To Direct A Star Wars Movie

In an interview with Collider, Whedon was asked about returning to the world of big-budget tentpole filmmaking following his two Avengers installments. Some may recall he appeared very worn down by the process during publicity for Age of Ultron, but some time away from the Hollywood machine seems to have recharged his batteries. Whedon expressed interest in doing one of the many Star Wars spinoffs coming through the pipeline:

I mean, it’s a fun thing to do, to put yourself in the service of something if you think you can add an interpretation. It’s no different than any other storytelling. There are some times when you get micro-managed to death but with Marvel, they let me make two movies that were very much mine. So do I want to make James Bond movie? Yeah. Anne Hathaway does Catwoman again? Sure, I’m in. Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, “I don’t want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?” But I saw the trailer for Rogue awhile ago and I was like, “I want to do that.” To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture.

They have no plans for anything beyond Episode 9 because they're waiting to see how Rogue One does. Aside from Darth Vader, that movie only features original characters. If people like it, that could become the norm. If people don't like it, expect more stand-alone movies like the Han Solo one. If Han Solo fails, well, I guess expect Episodes 10 through 12.
