Marvel’s Standalone ‘Black Widow’ Movie Gains Momentum With Jac Schaeffer Writing

Marvel is finally pushing ahead with the highly anticipated “Black Widow” standalone movie starring Scarlett Johansson, with Jac Schaeffer penning the script.

Sources say this is still very early development, as the film has no greenlight, but naming a writer is the closest the studio has come to moving forward on a standalone pic. Marvel President Kevin Feige met with several candidates before tapping Schaeffer, and Marvel execs met with Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a “Black Widow” writer.

Schaeffer is an up and coming scribe who broke out with her Black List script “The Shower,” a comedy about an alien invasion during a baby shower which caught the eye of Anne Hathaway, who quickly attached herself to star in the pic.

Hathaway was so impressed with her work that she soon tapped Schaeffer to write “Nasty Women,” a new female-centric take on “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” that also stars Hathaway.

Marvel had no comment.

Fans of the character have been pushing for her to get own movie since she first appeared in “Iron Man 2” and with the latest phase of Marvel films coming to a close, Marvel saw this as the best time to move forward with the project.

Johansson has appeared as the character in six films, the next one being this summer’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Schaeffer is repped by Verve and Writ Large.

I am all for it if they bring back Coulson, Hawkeye and Nick Fury so we get her true back story somewhat during the movie and by doing this movie Shield should be a part of her past in the movie. If the set the movie before Avengers Infinity War its kinda does not make since. I most rather see her movie end in the chair tie up where we see her in Avengers 1

How is this taking so long?

Feel like other marvel movies grab directors quick as hell and it's moving quickly. This seems slow.

It is being reported that the director of Black Widow will be Cate Shortland.  If you're thinking to yourself, "Who the hell is Cate Shortland?" then you're certainly not alone in that thought.  She makes ultra-low budget chick flicks that nobody watches outside of Australian film festivals and Netflix.

No doubt about the action scenes, and that's probably for the best.  I don't agree that, "Marvel has it all figure out." though.  Ant-Man and the Wasp makes that very clear.  

I'm wondering what she brings to the table that's different from what we've seen before.  I would think that Black Widow would be an espionage film, which is nothing like what Shortland has done in the past.  I'm just hoping Marvel isn't hiring her just to do as she's told.  That's why Ant-Man and the Wasp isn't anything worth noting.  They've got a Yes Man at the helm who just follows orders.  Marvel needs to beg Edgar Wright for forgiveness and get him to do the third Ant-Man/Wasp movie.

Harbour is such a gem of a guy with heaps of personality. Glad he has finally joined the MCU, he deserves way more roles than he is given.

He's in the MCU, DCEU, and Hellboy universe. Well done. Not many actors gave done 3 different superhero movie franchises.

In Red Sparrow the main character was a spy who used sex to get info. BW was a bona fide ruthless assassin that was saved by a man who somehow saw the good in her. What did Clint see that made her redeemable in his eyes? How did he approach her? What made BW reevaluate her way of life? How did she handle her integration with SHIELD? The similarity begins and ends with the character origin. The rest is different.

A Perfect Black Widow Movie would be a hybrid between Red Sparrow and Mission Impossible.

There is also a small chance “A Black Widow” movie could take place after “Endgame”

In the comics Hawkeye goes to hell to rescue his dead wife (Bobbie from Agents of Shield) though accidentally brings back Hellcat (Trish from Jessica Jones).

With his final comment with Scarlet Witch about wanting to talk to Black Widow, and Wanda saying she knew, and with Vision dead, they might be in line for an interesting and regrettable trip into the afterlife…

Could Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch make that trade to get Black Widow and Vision back as well? Anything is possible right now. What do you guys think “Black Widow” being a prequel or a movie that takes place after “Endgame?”

That's the rumor, at least.  Nothing after Spider-Man: Far From Home has a release date yet.  It will probably be SDCC, especially since there will be no DC movie panel.
