Well it is by Zhang Yimou, who is a fantastic filmmaker so I'll give this more hope than I normally would. Seriously, Yimou is awesome, best filmmaker from China other than Wong Kar-Wai.

Americans are already pissed about it. Fixed. It's one trailer, specfically designed to garner western attention. We have no true context of characters yet. This isn't Ghost in the Shell or Gods of Egypt. This project was designed to include Eastern and Hollywood movie stars. Nobody is losing roles to white actors. If anything this seems like a good opportunity to show the brass we will pay to see some more diversity in our blockbusters (because, face it, that isn't going to change over overnight). But not if we kill it before it's even had a chance to prove itself. |

I don't think people actually give a shit. You can't let a few idiots on the Internet represent everyone. Matt Damon is, like, the only white guy in the trailer and the only movie star. Obviously the marketing is gonna focus on him, but most people realize this is largely an Asian film designed to make money in China which is surpassing America at the box office. |

No, I understand, this whole thing was made because of all these Chinese/Hollywood mergers. Its going happen more and more. And he's the only western movie star (though sounds like DaFoe is in this). There are some big Asian names in this movie. But who in middle America are going to know them? So they focus on Damon.
But seriously....how do we know he is going to be a "savoir"? There is nothing in that trailer that leads to me think that, granted that could change because who knows!
I see a whole army of people who aren't Matt Damon doing stuff too.
I get the frustration with things like Gods of Egypt and even Last Samurai....but I feel like this could actually be a step in a right direction for once. And it's fucking Yimou!! The guy knows how to make visual feast!
