Nobody here associates box office earnings with the quality of a film.

I think I'll do a like/dislike analysis for this one.
Likes: - Interactions between the cast members. The story opened these up a little more this time around, and these characters and their relationships are a big part of why this was an enjoyable watch overall. They especially played up the Bones/Spock team, which I liked.
- The nature of the story, namely how the characters were split up. It allowed them each to have their moments and the story seemed to have a singular purpose. There was some pretty on-the-nose themes, like unity vs struggle, that would have been done more subtly, but oh well.
- I liked the mirror between Kirk's doubts and the villain's motives. When the movie started off with Kirk feeling lost, I thought it was an interesting idea to explore. Mind you, it ended up exactly where we all knew it would.
Dislikes: - Visually, I found this movie very, very dark. Most of the time I couldn't really tell what was even happening, let alone be able to take in the details of the frame. I'm not sure if it was the 3D, or the projection at my theater (though I'm never had problems there before), but it was really annoying.
- The action was either really bland, or really blurry. Again, could have been 3D, but if they choose to release it in that overstayed-its-welcome format, then the criticism is deserved.
- The Sabotage moment. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.
- The character of Jayla. She was endearing enough that this isn't that big an issue, but something about her just felt... juvenile, maybe?
This was pretty average. There were other small things that irked me, but overall the likable characters tend to save it.
7/10

Some people focus on how much the movies make money wise for it too be a good film. More people need too just watch and review movies because remember in the older days when movies made less at the box office and movies were based on acting, story and cast. Some people? You focus on it probably more than anyone else here. .... maybe Neverending.

It definitely isn't any darker than many other movies and probably has a brighter look than the last two Trek films. Also if you're still seeing movies in 3D you kind of only have yourself to blame... 3D sucks 95% of the time.

Since when have i ever based on liking a movie based on how much it made. I have liked several movies that were considered box office bombs.

I know, but our theater usually only offers one showing of 2D for these big movies at some time that usually never works, if its offered at all. Its frustrating.

Actually, now that Ian brings it up...
I saw it in 2D, but I remember the action sequence that took place at night on/in the crashed Enterprise looking very dark and shadowy/indistinct. I have to wonder if that was a result of the more muted color palette the film had overall, especially compared to Star Trek and Into Darkness.

I found the action boring because all the ship attack scenes were at night and the 3D looked terrible even in IMAX. I thought maybe the projection that was off or the glasses were bad... I'm getting so freaking sick of everything being 3D without needing too. You know why "Avatar" worked? because it was bright, colorful, and shiny throught-out the whole film. Studios just want to make money and want that extra crash grab in 3D because they can who cares if it was meant for 3D or not... Audiences will see it no matter what.

Well like I said before, the theater isn't really giving me a 2D option. I should write a letter...

Just saw Star Trek Beyond. Will Be seeing Suicide Squad Next week. Im Kinda behind on my movie going. Im very glad Lin got a chance at something in action but not with Cars. This was a pretty fun wild ride. It also felt like a star trek episode to which they are on a Five Year Mission.
I at first was wanting a good Klingon Villain but I kinda ended up liking new aliens used in this. I really like The Female Alien withe the face paint. Probably hottest looking female character in trek since Blalock as a Vulcan in Enterprise.
I did kinda felt like Spock was out of sink from the first movie performance from the actor. And well i still hate Simon Pegg as Mr Scott. Only because i loved the original actor so much.
I think Pine gets better as Kirk but I have liked this version of Kirk better then Shatners Pause Kirk. But maybe i am biased there too because my favorite captain is Picard. anyways i liked the movie pretty well but am nt surprised its struggling at the Box Office. Whatever movie we got was gonna make less because of Into Darkness.
I am kinda surprised that Dracula liked the movie on some level though. But I would also agree this years summer movies has been well less then i was hoping for. Civil War and B V S was less then i hoped but then again I loved The Jungle Book, Deadpool, Zootopia and Warcraft. 8/10
