I think Chris Pine should play him. Or Shatner.

Chekov's absence doesn't have to be explained, since Starfleet is a military organization. He was promoted and transferred. What they really need to do is explain why nobody else in the crew ever gets promoted or transferred. People in the military don't stay in the same position for more than a few years. They might manage to stay on the same ship, but not in the same job. People who can't handle more responsibility are shuffled off to a base somewhere to make way for someone with more potential in the real world. In Wrath of Khan, Chekov was serving as First Officer of the Grissom. In the novelization of Wrath of Khan, Sulu was Captain of the Excelsior, and was only aboard the Enterprise because it was a training mission, and his ship was still under construction. That bit didn't appear in the movie because of Shatner and his massive ego.

It would have been great to see Pine and Hemsworth to be in the film together... I'm pumped!

More timeline tinkering then.
I like the idea but the intro to JJ's first Star Trek was by far the most emotional moment of the new series. They're gonna dilute that by going down this road.

J.J.'s Star Trek is an alternate timeline. The original timeline still exists. Did we ever meet Kirk's dad in the original series or movies? I don't think so. So it SHOULD be possible to cast Hemsworth as Shatner's dad.

Hemsworth can end up in J.J.'s timeline like Nimoy did. And the movie will end with the tear jerking moment of Kirk having to say goodbye to his dad for a 2nd time.

Then Nimoy sees the timeline break off again and it ends with him facepalming and saying: "Oh, for fuck's sake..." "THE CREW OF THE USS ENTERPRISE WILL RETURN...in Universe #4!"
So what's more surprising, good Ghostbusters reviews or good Star Trek "IV" reviews?
I gotta be honest, I thought Pegg would be out of his depth.

I trust Empire more than most:
"Those concerned by the hiring of Lin to replace Abrams need not be. Yes, he is the man who revitalised the Fast And Furious franchise by taking it in a gloriously OTT, ridiculously stupid direction, but here he dials down that freneticism for something more considered.
It’s relatively low on the explosions front, and there are whole scenes here where the camera doesn’t move. But when the action starts, he’s more than capable of handling it, most notably in the bravura extended sequence when the Enterprise is ripped to shreds by Krall’s seemingly unstoppable swarm of bee-like ships. And throughout it all, there’s a lovely reverence for the legacy of Trek."
It's actually kind of heartwarming that both this and Ghostbusters are getting a decent rep after so many people, myself included, had already made their minds up. They both need new trailer producers though.
My services are available... But I know how hard it can be when they don't supply the whole movie.

I had my doubts about Ghostbusters, but I never expected Star Trek Beyond to be bad. I knew it was poor marketing. Simon Pegg wasn't gonna write a shitty Star Trek movie. He couldn't afford to lose his nerd/geek cred.

I think you guys are forgetting something. People don't have good taste in Star Trek.
Metacritic:
Star Trek - 82 Star Trek Into Darkness - 72 Star Trek Beyond - 71

I don't know why people bag on Search for Spock, one of the odd-numbered Star Trek's, it's a fun movie!
