Can we really count Cimino in the same category? Thunderbolt & Lightfoot is a Clint Eastwood production, meaning, Cimino had no real power. Deer Hunter is a piece of shit. Heaven's Gate killed 70's Hollywood. And his last four movies are largely forgotten.

Whether you like it or no The Deer Hunter is widely seen as a classic and Heaven's Gate is for better or worse an important part of the history of the era. His career may have gone south fast but he's definately a peer or the Scorseses, De Palmas, Coppolas, and Lucases.
