If the Academy Awards actually gave a fuck about comedies, we may have just witnessed this year's first serious contenders for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best "Supporting" Actress. The Nice Guys, co-written and directed by Shane Black of Lethal Weapon fame, is about an enforcer, a private eye and a 13-year-old girl teaming up in 1970's Los Angeles to solve a crime involving porn, the Detroit car industry and the justice department. If this all sounds silly, and possibly convoluted, it is. But it doesn't matter because the acting carries the whole movie. Russell Crowe plays the tough guy with the heart of gold. Ryan Gosling plays an idiot who survives almost entirely on pure luck. And newcomer Angourie Rice plays the girl who was forced to grow up early. Individually they're great. Together, they're even better. Combine that with good humor and old school action scenes and you have a fun evening at the theater - or at home.

I can't speak for everywhere, but at my theater, it seems to be the counter programming for Neighbors 2. I saw a lot of high school and college kids at Neighbors 2 while The Nice Guys is packed with post-college twentysomethings. I guess to a certain age group Shane Black actually has marquee value. Plus, Russell Crowe was a legitimate movie star for a few years and it's nice to see him in something good again. ALSO, you can't overlook Ryan Gosling. There was A LOT of girls (young women) at my screening and they all seemed to enjoy it more than the guys. I thought the movie was funny but not THAT funny. But these girls were laughing their ass off.

The Nice Guys
In most ways The Nice Guys works. It's funny, entertaining, fast paced and is a nice way to spend an afternoon. On the flip side however and I understand that this is my movie snob talking, it's just a ho-hum effort from a guy like Shane Black. Aside from the gags that are provided almost solely by Ryan Gosling it's standard action/comedy fare that hits many, many similar beats that are found in other Shane Black films. In fact if you threw a few more jokes into The Last Boy Scout you would have almost an identical movie to The Nice Guys. Private investigator who's on a case, teams up with another guy making an Odd Couple pairing, one guy has a daughter who acts way too mature for her age (one of my biggest pet peeves in movies) and eventually they unravel a huge conspiracy that goes straight to the top before it all ends and they end up becoming partners. It's exactly like The Last Boy Scout on paper and while that doesn't make it a bad movie it doesn't help it stand out. It could have but it chose not to. It's a buddy action/comedy movie that's fun but doesn't really 'go for it' like it could have. The jokes are funny but they're too few and far between. The action is cool but there isn't enough of it. The plot like I said is extremely generic and predictable. It just seems like a movie that took the best parts of the filmmaker's other movies and tried to reuse them while passing it off as an original movie (looking at you Crimson Peak).
The Nice Guys is an entertaining movie and is worth your time if you want a fun way to spend an afternoon but it's nothing that will stick with me. I'm glad I saw it but it isn't a movie that's going to change your life.

I'm on the same page with Doomsday here. The Nice Guys is the latest from Shane Black, who in his third directed effort, returns to the formula that made him a Hollywood name with his Lethal Weapon screenplay in 1987 with a new buddy cop comedy. This time around, the film is set in 1970s Los Angeles, a fun backdrop for poking fun at LA's smog, materialism, and the blooming pornography industry that the film somewhat centers around. As with any buddy formula, The Nice Guys' protagonists are tough-guy-for-hire Russel Crowe, who provides sensibility and brass knuckle sucker punches, and bumbling P.I. Ryan Gosling, who through drinking and falling into every form of bodily harm imaginable delivers the majority of the film's laughs and charm. The rest of the cast rounds out with characters that don't provide a whole lot, save for Gosling's daughter. The young actress is no doubt talented, but she's your typical example of a kid that acts way too wise and mature for her age. Some parts of the movie work with this when she's berating Gosling, but as the movie goes on it just feels too contrived and borders on annoying. Why is it the kids with a clumsy single parent in movies that have undergone some tragedy are always early MENSA candidates? It's too easy and from a respected writer like Black, we expect more.
For a detective film, the plot itself plays out very linearly without any astounding revelations. Sure, there's a twist in the film, but if you didn't see it coming right when the scene begins then this may be your first movie. Again, from Black I think it's safe to say we expect more. I know this is a comedy and not Chinatown per se, but the movie certainly doesn't have as much up its sleeve as I had hoped. Still, the film does shine it what it sets out to accomplish. The script is definitely funny with the laughs coming from slapstick, sight gags, play on words, basically everything. Crowe and Gosling also have excellent chemistry together and really play well off one another. They absolutely carry the film, and their banter almost gets the film off the hook for the weaknesses I outlined above. The film also, for the most part, utilizes its setting and time period well. The soundtrack and wardrobe are solid, though not nearly on the level of detail as say a Boogie Nights.
The Nice Guys is by no means the second coming of Lethal Weapon, but thanks to the strong performances from its leads and a funny script, its very effective as breezy entertainment. There's not much meat on its bones in the story department, but Shane Black leans enough on what works to create what will likely be one of the best comedies of the year.

If there’s one good thing the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done its help bring writer/director Shane Black to prominence. Black became known as a major screenwriter in 1987 on the heels of hits like Lethal Weapon and Predator and would go on to make a lot of money penning action screenplays into the 90s. However after The Long Kiss Goodnight, Black largely disappeared. In 2005 Black would make his directorial debut with a solid little movie called Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and while it certainly has built a cult audience over the years, the film was only modestly successful critically and financially. However for the third entry in their Iron Man franchise, Marvel tapped Black as a co-writer and director. I didn’t necessarily love Iron Man 3, but Black’s witty voice did come through strong and more importantly the film proved to be a billion dollar success. Since then, a lot more work has come Black’s way, including the next film in the Predator franchise set to come in the next few years. Black’s first film post Marvel is The Nice Guys, a buddy-crime noir that does everything you’d expect from a Shane Black film but does it pretty well.
Set in Los Angeles of 1977, The Nice Guys follows two men at low points in their lives coming together to solve a missing person’s case. Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) is an off the books enforcer; a tough guy you call to beat some ass when some scumbag is up to no good. Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is a private detective with an inquisitive and intelligent teenage daughter named Holly (Angourie Rice). The two become involved in a case involving a missing girl named Amelia (Margaret Qualley). As they investigate, the pair discover a conspiracy of corruption and violence ranging from the pornography business, to the mob, to the auto industry.
Like many of Black’s films, The Nice Guys draws much of its strength from simply allowing its lead characters to interact. Jackson and Holland are both fun characters that fit in well within this world. They’re both remnants of film noir storytelling, but they’re also flawed and light enough to work within the film’s comedy. Russell Crowe brings the right mix of tough guy bravado and world weariness to Jackson Healy, but the real show stealer is Ryan Gosling who gives a downright amazing comedic turn. Gosling really nails the character’s more pathetic aspects, alcoholism, and general incompetence, while also having just enough legitimate chops to sell Holland as a detective. More often than not, Crowe ends up playing straight-man to Gosling and the results are often hilarious. The two also benefit greatly from Black’s script, which is full of all sorts of witty banter and funny one-liners. Generally speaking, The Nice Guys does work very well as a comedy. While it does take a little time for the jokes to really get cooking, once they do they hardly let up. In its best moments the film is hilarious and even at lower comedic points it’s still clever and amusing. Black also seems to have improved as a director as the visual comedy here is a lot stronger than what was seen in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The highlight in this regard is probably the climax, which is infused with a lot of comedy thanks to the physical performance and framing of Gosling.
While the film is a comedy, anyone just expecting a frivolous comedy might be a little taken aback by the levels of violence on display. While The Nice Guys is never gratuitous, it is a violent film and that violence is taken seriously. There are consequences to the action on screen as well as a certain grimness and people do actually die. Personally, I actually really liked this approach and I thought Black did a good job presenting in a violence that could resonate without becoming to overbearing or depressing. In short, the film can be taken seriously while still being quite funny. That said, I don’t think The Nice Guys works fully as just a straight mystery. While a lot of details are set-up and handled well, the script still dumps certain details of the plot in awkward clumps which don’t come naturally and mostly feel like a shortcut to get the characters from here to there. This is especially prominent in the third act. Ideally, a mystery should function a lot smoother than that. Additionally, the ending of the film tries to invoke a certain sense of danger and cynicism in spite of the plot wrap-up. These are classic noir tropes, but they feel perfunctory here and don’t feel like what the movie was building towards.
Weighing all three of Black’s directorial efforts, I’d say The Nice Guys is easily the strongest. It lacks the bloat and awkward storytelling of Iron Man 3 and is also clearly a lot more technically polished than Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Additionally, while Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’s comedy often overwhelmed and undercut the actual story and characters, The Nice Guys doesn’t have that problem. Black has shown significant growth with each film and with The Nice Guys he’s made his most complete and assured film. That isn’t to say The Nice Guys is a perfect film, its narrative isn’t as tight as it could have been and the ending doesn’t really feel earned, and I also don’t think Black has directed a film as good as some of his written works (namely Lethal Weapon). That all said, what it comes down to is simply this; The Nice Guys is a lot of fun. It’s very funny, has great energy, and has a pair of really great performances. If you’re looking for a fun time at the theater, your search is over.

Lovely movie, but I echo the formulaic sentiments. I remember being reminded of The Big Lebowski on a few occasions. Not that I really cared.
Bring on the sequel.

The Nice Guys is a great piece of entertainment. First of all, its hilarious. And its hilarious in two ways: the script and the performances. The jokes are well-written, but they're even better when delivered by the likes of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. These two leads are great together. They've got a strongly comedic chemistry that never fizzles throughout the whole movie.
Completing the trio is Ryan Gosling's daughter Holly played by newcomer Angourie Rice. She does a great job keeping up with her two superstar co-workers. Her character can verge on annoying every now and them, but overall she is a real asset to the film.
But not only does the movie work as great comedy, its also a pretty cool mystery story. I actually cared about the plot as it continued to unravel, and was always intrigued by the case they were working on. The opening scene for example is both wonderfully bizarre, funny in its own regard, and tantalizing with the mystery it provides.
Go see Nice Guys. After being bombarded with comic book movies and franchise sequels, its a breath of fresh air. They just don't make movies like this very much anymore. 9/10
