So I heard this morning that the CEO of AMC theaters is looking to encourage phone use in some theatres to lure in more millennials into the seats. In an interview with Variety, the head of AMC Adam Aron has admitted that he’s considering the idea of taking “specific auditoriums and make them more texting friendly”. Granted, this hasn’t been enacted yet, but he argues that “when you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don’t ruin the movie, they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow. You can’t tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That’s not how they live their life”.

To me this isn't the answer to get them into the seats. The AMC in Medford, NJ was amazing when it was renovated because it had the huge leather recliner seats that you had to reserve. That brought people in of all ages. Alamo Drafthouse will straight up ask you to leave with no refund if you don't follow the rules of leaving your cell phones off. It bothers me when I see somebody pull out their phone during a movie because it distracts me from what is on the screen. When I've had to do it, I get up and leave the theatre so as to not ruin the experience for others. I don't like this idea one bit.

The twitter reactions I've been seeing to this are universally negative and for good reason. It's a disgusting and horrible idea which also doesn't make a lot of sense. The people who are on their cell phones during a movie are the ones who only go to the theater once in a blue moon. Also, if people text during movies, why would allowing texting encourage them to come more. They ALREADY text, so the change in rules is meaningless.
Meanwhile, the people who do attend the theater frequently are the people who, buy and large, hate it when others text during the film. Business moves like this sell out the loyal customer for a few casuals who won't give a shit anyway.

There's...so many things wrong with this that I'm leaving the thread with that.

Fuck this idea and any theater that adopts it.

I guess I'm playing devil's advocate here, to a certain degree.
There seems to be a misunderstanding of what they're trying to do. Granted, I'm not defending the idea outright. I think it's dumb, but not for the reasons you guys seem to be thinking. It's more dumb for the theater owners, from a business stand point. They didn't say they were changing the rules for cell phone use. They said they would try opening specific auditoriums that would allow cell phone use. Maybe it would even be like a once a week or once a month type of deal. For a comparison (although more understandable), some theaters do set aside auditoriums for families to talk/sing, have the lights up and the audio level adjusted. It allows families with autistic children (or just general noisy children) to go see a movie without affecting the rest of the general movie going public. Funny enough, cell phone use is allowed in these cinemas as well, for obvious reasons.
The reason it's dumb for theater owners, is because the people who are annoying and inconsiderate enough to use their cell phones to begin with, are probably not going to think about whether or not they should make sure to buy tickets for those specific auditoriums. It wouldn't affect most of us even if they try it out. In their mind, it would help with the rest of us, in hopes that those who want to use cell phones while watching a movie, they will go see their movie in said auditoriums, so they aren't with the rest of us. It would probably be in some of their smallest auditoriums, because it wouldn't prove to be popular at the end of the day. What theaters who try it will find, is that few people will purchase tickets for it and it will lead to mostly empty auditoriums. People who are inconsiderate with their cell phone use are not going to be considerate enough to go out of their way to buy tickets for these specific shows.
I don't think it will work, but there's no real harm in them giving it a go. Going by their point of view, if by some bizarre reason it proved to be a success, it would help the rest of us by removing some of the cell phone using crowd in movies that we see.

Yeah, but the people who actually go to those auditoriums will then get even more used to doing shit like that and then the next time they find themselves in a normal auditorium they'll find themselves doing it even more than they would have.

The people that are dumb enough to not tell the difference, aren't going to be going out of their way to buy for these experimental auditoriums to begin with.
Either way, it's unlikely to work or spread. If they end up making less money by occupying an auditorium that they could have normally sold regular tickets for, theater owners and GMs are not going to like it.

As long as it doesn't affect my Stubs A-List functionality I don't care.
