It's actually quite brilliant. They know that if they straight up make James Bond black it could create an enormous backlash so split the difference, make 007 a black woman, presumably a temporary change, and keep James Bond as the white dude. No one will be completely happy but the fans will be less pissed and the SJWs who need constant pandering can declare some sort of victory.

Good lord. When you mix stupid media outlet titles with a bunch of drones who don't actually read the articles, just leading to a mass spread of misunderstandings and miscommunication. It certainly doesn't help with all the clickbait news reports such as "Here's the next 007 and it's a woman!". I continue to hear a bunch of people saying "a black woman is playing the new James Bond!"
No... no. James Bond is still being played by Daniel Craig. He's retiring from MI6. The 007 position is now being given to another agent. It's just a bloody story, that will still be focused on Daniel Craig aka James Bond. Otherwise it wouldn't be a "James Bond movie" now would it? But a bunch of people are assuming this is the inevitable reboot and instead of Idris Elba or the like, they've given the title role to Lashana Lynch.

It's a naked marketing strategy. They know that in the Twitter-age, you'll get some cross-section of morons apoplectic about everything being taken away from them. This in turn hopefully feeds counter-outrage where that loud subsection of initial complainers will be seen as over-representative. If the announcement lands correctly, the discussion in of itself gives the film publicity. I watched some of Neverending's video, I guess the most irritating part about it is that they have some huge problem with the Moneypenny arch in Skyfall. It sounds like they objected to a woman being in the field, fucking it up then being relegated to a desk. On the contrary I thought it was pretty cool giving Moneypenny a little backstory and not making her another lady to shoot glances at Bond. Also I love this fat woman saying 'the Bond series doesn't speak to me' or whatever. No shit lady.
