"Gammell's art is scary as fuck."-Guillermo del Toro Couldn't have said it better myself. If there's one thing that always made these stories stand out, it was the art that was included. They made the stories way scarier. If del Toro can bring even some of it to life, this is going to be a messed up movie. I'm still haunted today looking at these: |

I also grew up with these books. Not sure if you guys were aware but the publisher discontinued producing the books with Gammell's illustrations and got new illustrations that are much more 'appropriate' i.e. super lame. You can still buy the Gammell-illustrated books on ebay and used on Amazon which is what I did for my nephew's birthday. Now he's hooked like the rest of us and is able to experience Harold and The Bride and Wonderful Sausage with the REAL illustrations.

That sucks to hear. They wouldn't have been anywhere near as memorable without those. I guess with today's mass communication, parents must have complained enough. *And I just looked it up. Yeah, the new artwork is meh.
I'm sure they'll eventually rerelease the ones with Gammell's work. Maybe a New Coke / Classic Coke scenario. Especially now that Guillermo del Toro is doing the movie based on that original artwork. If it ends up resulting in new sales for the series, they'll have to print new copies of the originals.

Gammell's watercolor artwork is beautiful compared to the new illustrations. I know there was a documentary in the works over the books. I have them all and serious was amazed by the creepy art that went so well with the stories. Del Toro, I think, is the perfect choice to turn it into a movie.

Now I gotta look to see if the parents still have the copy we had growing up.
