Haha, I wish I would've taken that bet. I think some of the hype made my expectations higher. It was good, but it wasn't like "Oh my God, that's like the best movie like ever." And the twist at the end wasn't as mindblowing as I thought it might be.

the list is made, I'll get to the list but first an explination. I took all the top ten lists and gave points for each movie on each list. Putting a movie at # one on a list gave it ten points, #2 gave it 9 points and so on down to #10 which gives it a mere one. The more points the higher on the big list.

I didn't have a chance to see a lot of the smaller-released indie films like many, rather, I saw lots of blockbusters and big-budget box-office killers. Here's my top ten though. Pretty mainstream, I'm ashamed to say. Let's hope 2008 brings me more time to see movies!



1. Grindhouse.. Finally, something ORIGINAL!

2. Juno.. No explanation needed.

3. Knocked Up.. Could watch it everyday. Really funny.

4. Superbad.. Same deal as Knocked Up. Great comedy.

5. Ratatouille.. Pixar, you glorious bastards.

6. I Am Legend.. Atmospheric and creepy to say the least.

7. Harry Potter OOTP.. Best Potter film yet.

8. 1408.. Great Spielberg adaptation. Finally, true terror.

9. 300.. Mindless crass, but very stylistic and entertaining.

10. The Hitcher.. Surprisingly good movie. Loved it.

The list is made, I'll get to the list but first an explanation. I took all the top ten lists and gave points for each movie on each list. Putting a movie at # one on a list gave it ten points, #2 gave it 9 points and so on down to #10 which gives it a mere one. The more points the higher on the big list.

The next step is to find prospective parents for the yet unborn child. In the Pennysaver ad section, Juno finds Mark and Vanessa Loring, a yuppie couple living in the suburbs. Juno likes the Lorings, and in some respects has found who looks to be a kindred spirit in Mark, with whom she shares a love of grunge music and horror films. Vanessa is a little more uptight and is the one in the relationship seemingly most eager to have a baby. On her own choosing, Juno enters into a closed rather than open adoption contract with the Lorings - meaning she will have no contact with the baby after she gives it up. During the second and third trimesters of Juno's pregnancy which she treats with care but detachment, Juno's relationships with her family, with Paulie, and with the Lorings develop, the latter whose on the surface perfect life masks some hidden problems.

the top three, no real surprise there, figured they'd be there in some order or another. bourne at 4 is pretty awesome and i havent seen zodiac, but its nice to see people dont forget about a film just because it came out early in the year.



atonement surprises me just because i havent noticed a lot of buzz or praise for that film on these boards at all.

1.Inglorious Basterds



Easily my favourite film of the year. The film's cast is great. Everyone does a great job. The big standouts being Brad Pitt, Melanie Laurent, and of course, Christoph Waltz. But the real star of the film is the script. As always, Tarantino manages to deliver a script with great dialogue, great characters, and a great story. The film has a great blend of dramatic and comedic scenes and characters. The film also pulls of some great action scenes without constantly relying on them.



2.District 9

I know there's a lot of mixed feelings about this movie here, but I loved it. Like Inglorious Basterds, this films ultimate star is the script. But while Basterds specialized in characters and dialogue, District 9 specialized in story. Just the initial back story is great, but when you add on Wikus becoming a renegade on his own planet, it takes the film to a higher level. Not to mention this film has some great action and effects. All for a budget of $30 million.



3.Watchmen



Again, I'm sure this won't be a popular choice, but I don't care. I love this movie. Granted, I may not have liked this movie if I hadn't read the graphic novel, but still. Zack Snyder took what seemed to be an unfilmable comic, and make it a great film. This movie benefits from a great script and good direction, but the best thing about the film are three key performances. Patrick Wilson as Nite Owl II, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian, and Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach. All of these actors, particularly the last two, really embody the characters there playing. So much so that the became iconic in the roles. I have a few issues with the film, but the positives far out weigh the negatives.



4.Up in the Air

This film just wrapped me up in the story and took me for a ride. This comes from it's great script. As well as it's great director Jason Reitman. The performances in this really make it credible though. And while the entire cast is great, George Clooney really stands out as Ryan Bingham. His first major task is making someone who's job is firing people likeable, which he does. Throughout the film, I felt the same emotions Ryan felt. Whether it be joy, or sadness. And the film can get pretty sad. Despite this, the film has a good sense of humor and is just fun to watch.



5.Avatar



After a 12 year hiatus, James Cameron returns with a bang. Now this film has been criticized by people for having a weak story, but I disagree. I believe the story isn't weak, just not terribly original. I found myself still getting emotionally invested and caring for a few humans and the Na'vi. And of course the effects are breath taking. But this isn't just because of how grand they are, it's also because of how creative the designs of Pandora are. Now everything from the humans is what you'd expect from a futuristic sci-fi setting. This isn't a bad thing, it's just true. But I think this works as good contrast between the creative and unique designs of Pandora and the Na'vi. I thought the performances where good from everyone, especially the leads. It may not deserve all the money it's making, but a great film none the less.



6.Public Enemies



I don't understand why this film was so poorly reviewed. What's there to hate about it? Johnny Depp is fantastic as always. Christian Bales' performance isn't as memorable, but is still great. I thought Marion Cotillard was great has Dillinger's girl friend. The direction was great as was the script. So what's the deal? Well, in my opinion, Michael Mann crafted a great film that shouldn't have been written off so soon.



7.The Hangover

This movie is just hilarious. Straight up hilarious. The script is great, and the actors have great comedic timing. Right away, the movie's funny. But it goes from funny to side splitting hilarity as soon as they wake up with no memory. A lot of people have credited the film as also being fairly smart for a comedy like this, but at the end of the day, it's just the fact that this movie will make you laugh your a** of that gets it this spot.



8.Sherlock Holmes

There are two reasons this film is on the list, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. The film's plot was cool, the villain was ok and all, but Downey Jr. and Law are fantastic. The great thing is the film focuses most of it's time with these two. Regardless of if they where having comedic or emotional moments, there chemistry was great. The film also benefited from a good score, as well as good set and costume designs.



9.Zombieland

Like the Hangover, this film's greatest asset is simply the fact that it's simply hilarious. But unlike the Hangover, where it had the great cast, Zombieland relies pretty much on one man; Woody Harrelson. Not that the other actors aren't good, but they don't have the same impact that Woody does. Although this film could of had a better story, the film still works. Just a lot of fun.



10.Star Trek

I think I should note that outside of this film, I've never seen anything else from Star Trek. Yet I had a great time with this film. Like Sherlock Holmes, this film's cast really made the film. However in this case, instead of just two actors, almost everyone was fantastic (though none as good as Downey Jr. or Law). Every major crew member of the Enterprise was a lot of fun. The effects and action scenes where all also great. The only real negative was the villain was fairly bland. Still a great film.



I'd like to give out a special nod to Anvil, I loved that film, and was very happy to finally see them get some attention. But like I said, no documentaries.

It's no big deal, I don't mind movie conversation going on between submissions, although if someone else does that in the future it would be nice if they posted a simple list at the end that can be easily cut and pasted.

It's your list, but you might want to keep in mind that there is another way to do it. For instance, if you gave the top ranked one 20 points and the lowest 10 points, it gives extra points for making the list. Because, of course, there were more than 10 movies last year.



Imagine if you took everyone's list and had them add on an 11th movie. By your system, that movie would be given 0 points. Or, to put it another way, let's say EVERYONE put...Up, in the 10th place. Let's also say there were 12 contestants. By your method, it would be beaten simply by one person giving a movie (ANY movie) a 1st place rating, and probably wouldn't end up in 10th place (as it should be). By giving only one point to the bottom movie (which is so close to zero) we may as well only list 9 movies...



Know what I mean?

I do know what you mean, in fact I ran an experiment in adding up the list with both of those methods and the results were fundamentally the same, I think maybe two movies swapped slots and that's it, there wasn't even a new number ten. I decided to stick with the original system because it would be comparable with the old results.

Some (a lot of them actually) have iffy release dates in America, but it's not a huge deal if you want to stick with them. That rule is more there to keep people from voting for movies from the last year that opened wide this year. So, like, it's mainly there to keep people from voting for... say... The Wrestler. Some of those might be eligible again next year.

It premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September of 2008 and won a handful of awards there and consequently had an early release in Italy in the October of 2008 in order to capitalize on the publicity. It did not open commercially anywhere else until well into 2009.

The list is made, I'll get to the list but first an explanation. I took all the top ten lists and gave points for each movie on each list. Putting a movie at # one on a list gave it ten points, #2 gave it 9 points and so on down to #10 which gives it a mere one. The more points the higher on the big list.

Out of curiosity, what made Up #10 and District 9 #9 even though they had the same number of points and neither had any first place votes?



And my list is usually pretty close to how this list turns out every year, but not this year. Too bad.

It's a scientific process of picking the movie I like better and giving it a bump. Technically they're a tie and neither of them really ranks higher than the other.

I think it would make more sense to just count up who had overall higher placements on people's lists and then rank that one higher or just leave them both at #9 and put another movie in at #10. Just an idea.

You should make a distinction with LOTR and Kill Bill as whether to count them as one or separately, because otherwise you'll be getting both ways in the lists.
