It's also been politicized to the point where the more people on the left bag on it the more people on the right will rally around it saying they need to 'do their part.' That's very true, and that's fine. I'm sure "The Passion of the Christ" benefited from similar mentalities. Social media was in its infancy in 2004. Any controversey was a minor issue. The true success of The Passion came from Mel Gibson targeting religious groups and advertising it as a must-see movie. In a way, Warner Bros did a similar thing. They NEVER promoted American Sniper as "AMERICA, FUCK YEAH." Every TV spot focused on Bradley Cooper struggling with the war and his PTSD. Their target audience was soldiers and families of soldiers. They turned American Sniper into a must-see for every military family.

True, but it turned into an 'America, fuck yeah!' movie as it started to attract controversy. Liberals criticized it for a number of reasons, some more valid than others, and conservatives said 'to see it is patriotic!' Once again it became an us vs. them issue.
I had my problems with the movie but it had nothing to do with politics, it was just very cliched.

Once again it became an us vs. them issue. There's no doubt that all the social media arguments have helped its box office. I'm sure many people have watched the movie just to see what all the fighting is about. But I still think Warner Bros' marketing department got the job done. American Sniper was very under-the-radar till those excellent TV spots.

For someone who loses sleep over flops, he should have thought a couple seconds before pushing a cyber-action film with Chris Hemsworth.

Why is "The Seventh Son" making so much money overseas? It's kinda funny actually, given that it's going to tank hard domestically.

These days, movies tend to make more money overseas because non-rich countries are starting to get the high-tech theaters we've had for 15 years. China, in particular, has become a MAJOR market for movies.

SUMMER 2014 BOX OFFICE: WINNERS AND LOSERS While summer 2014 didn't have any Lone Ranger-sized flops, there were plenty of films that barely broke even or were disappointments domestically but still did decent enough business overseas to avoid being branded total bombs. EXAMPLES include Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow, Dwayne Johnson's Hercules, the Cameron Diaz-Jason Segel comedy Sex Tape, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's Blended, Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West, and Planes: Fire & Rescue.

I had kind of assumed the whole Spongebob thing ended at least a decade ago... SpongeBob is The Simpsons of children's television. It has lasted WAY longer than it should have (16 years and counting) and still manages to get surprising good ratings (3-to-4 million viewers per episode).
