Danny Boyle has another Oscar contender on his hands after Steve Jobs debuted to raves at the Telluride Film Festival, but he’s already plotting his next project: Trainspotting 2.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker (Slumdog Millionaire) told Deadline that after years of rumors and internet chatter, the sequel to his 1996 indie hit is finally about to become a reality. “All the four main actors want to come back and do it,” he said in Colorado, where he was receiving a special honor. “Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.”
Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh published a sequel, Porno, in 2002, picking up on the lives of the original crew of junkies and derelicts, Renton, Begbie, Sick Boy, and Spud. Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle, who played Sick Boy and Begbie, respectively, are now TV stars, with roles on Elementary and Once Upon a Time. But now that Boyle has gone on the record, and there’s an agreeable script from Trainspotting screenwriter John Hodge, things might fall into place.
Ewan McGregor, who became a star after his break-out role as Renton, is seemingly onboard. In December he told EW, “It’s supposed to be happening in 2016. I did speak about it with Danny and I’m very excited by the idea of it. I wouldn’t have wanted to do it before, but in the last few years, I’ve completely changed my mind. I think it would be quite an amazing thing to make a sequel to a movie 20 years later, with all the same characters.”
