ENTRY #1 ANGEL (1984)I love Netflix and any streaming site that offers reasonable prices, but there's also no denying that it has killed the art of advertising. There's an entire generation that will never know the thrill's of walking into a video store and renting a movie solely based on the cover. Sure, someone can create an amusing title or an attention-grabbing photo for a movie on rental/streaming sites, but user ratings and reviews will kill any false illusions right away. The "risk" of watching movies has been obliterated. That's why movies like Angel no longer exist. It's about a 15-year-old honor roll student who moonlights as a prostitute. The pervert in all of us is intrigued by the premise and the poster/cover does an exceptional job of sealing the deal, but unfortunately, Angel is a very uneventful movie. It's basically a sappy story about a girl who's abandoned by her parents and finds a new family on the streets of Hollywood Blvd. If it weren't for the sub-plot involving a serial killer, Angel could almost pass for a Disney movie. The saving grace is the director's decision to cast respectable actors in the roles. They fill the screen with strong emotions, good humor and a 1980's charm that is difficult to resist. Angel doesn't deliver what it promises, but it won't leave you empty-handed either. C

Lol, this sounds exactly like something you'd stumble upon in Blockbuster and just say yeah fuck it, why not? Was this actually released in theaters?
This is a great thread idea btw, I feel like you're the king of obscure "what the hell, I've never heard of this before" films on here so I'll get a kick out of the movies you post.

"It's her choice. Her chance. Her life."
Yeesh, what a tagline. That could easily be used for pro-choice chants.

I looked this up on Rotten Tomatoes. No score, which was not surprising. What was surprising is there were two sequels to this. The obscureness of those would need their own thread, an obscurer obscure.

ENTRY #2 BAD BOYS (1983)In Bad Boys, not to be confused with the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence classic, Sean Penn plays a teenager who is sent to a juvenile prison for killing a child during a car chase with police. Later on, the boy's brother is sent to the same prison and seeks revenge. It's a good idea for a story, but the execution is very poor. The whole movie comes across as sappy and unrealistic, and every bad decision by the characters could have easily been avoided with some common sense. Bad Boys has respectable acting and decent directing, but it's greatest accomplishment is reminding audiences of the importance for a screenplay that makes sense. D+

When are you journeying back into the obscure again? Justin Dracula PG Cooper21 HOURS AT MUNICH (1976)10 years ago, Steven Spielberg made a movie about the Israeli government ordering secret agents to assassinate 11 Palestinians who were involved in the terrorist attack against their people at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. But the film didn't dwell too much on what happened at the Olympics. It was focused on the revenge plot. So if you want to watch "a prequel" to the spy story in Spielberg's Munich, you have to go all the way back to the 1970's. Released only 4 years after the events at the Olympics, 21 Hours at Munich is a detailed recreation of a Palestinian terrorist group holding Israeli athletes hostage in exchange for certain people being released from prisons in Israel. 21 Hours at Munich was originally broadcast on the ABC television network in the United States, but released theatrically in the rest of the world. This was a common thing in the 1970's. Spielberg's 1971 movie, Duel, is a good example of a film that had the same release platform. So don't be discouraged. It has high production value. It was made in the exact locations where the real life events took place. And it stars Academy Award winner William Holden and Italian star Franco Nero. That's Nero in the photo I posted. So if he looks like the bad guy from Die Hard 2, that's because it's him. He's also the original Django. DoomsdayAnyway, the movie does a good job of recreating the events of that day. For historical reasons, I think people should consider watching it. Be be warned. It follows the procedural format. The Israeli hostages are mostly in the background. And it's very emotionless. But you could probably accuse the Spielberg movie of similar things. PhantomKnightB-Deexan

DraculaDEEP COVER (1992)In honor of Dr. Dre's first album in 16 years, let's go back to his first single as a solo artist and the debut of Snoop Dogg. I'm sort of cheating here because, unless you're under 25, you should know what Deep Cover is. It stars Laurence Fishburne as an undercover cop trying to take down drug suppliers. He and Jeff Goldblum, who plays one of the villains, deliver strong performances but the movie itself is very by-the-number. It's directed by Bill Duke, of Commando and Predator fame, and he probably should have stuck to his day job. You can argue that if it wasn't for the Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg song, Deep Cover might have gotten lost in a sea of similar movies from the early 1990's. C says @dukeleto

Always loved the song which was oddly hard to find on iTunes and Amazon last time I checked Yeah, it's not available. It might be tied up in rights issues since the soundtrack features other artists. Dr. Dre worked on three songs for the album. One of them, Snoop Dogg's It's On, is still unreleased but a leaked version has circulated over the years.

Haven't seen Deep Cover, but judging by the picture of Goldblum and Morpheus, I stand by my C rating.

Since PG Cooper loves Tower Heist so much, he should check out... HOW TO BEAT THE HIGH CO$T OF LIVING (1980)How to Beat the High Cost of Living is a light-hearted comedy about three financially unstable housewives robbing a mall. It stars Susan Saint James, Jane Curtin and Jessica Lange. The three actresses have great chemistry and are also fun to watch individually. The movie begins by showing the money problems of each woman, then it moves on to them planning their robbery of the mall, and finally, we see them rob the mall. The first part of the story has some pacing issues, but the other two parts are great entertainment. So be a little patient. You'll be rewarded with a very enjoyable feel-good comedy. Bound for Glory (1976)While Dracula and PG Cooper masturbate to this year's Academy Awards, featuring a group of movies that will be forgotten in 6 months, let's take a trip to 40 years ago and re-visit the legendary 1976 Academy Awards. The Best Picture nominees were Rocky, Taxi Driver, Network, All the President's Men and Bound for Glory. Wait. Bound... bound... bound for glory? What the fuck is that? A sports movie? A war movie? A... superhero movie? No... no... none of those. It's a Depression Era movie starring David Carradine. 1976. A year that also featured The Omen, Carrie, Marathon Man, Mel Brooks' Silent Movie, Silver Streak and The Outlaw Josey Wales. They gave the 5th slot to Bound for Glory. A movie so forgotten that when David Carradine died jerking off there wasn't a single mention of it by anyone. Death Race 2000 is more fondly remembered. Let that sink in. So should I just blind hate this movie? Nah. Of course not. I watched it. It's good. It's just... well... you'll see. Inspired by the life of folk singer Woody Guthrie, his claim to fame is This Land is Your Land, the movie follows his road to success in Depression Era America. It has Academy Award winning cinematography. It's the first movie to use the steadicam, although it was better utilized in Rocky. The music is good. It has good performances. There's really nothing bad in it. It's just a two and a half hour movie about a redneck singing folk songs during the Depression. Who was this movie made for? Old people... in 1976. Even 40 years ago old people were spoiling the Academy Awards. Things don't change. Look, honestly, it's a fine movie. Director Hal Ashby has classics under his belt. Kevin Smith wishes his career were that good. But if you're gonna nominate it for Best Picture, alongside Taxi Driver, people expect a higher level of quality. I would argue that being nominated is the worst thing that happened to this movie. The hype killed it. That's why I'm so tough on the Academy Awards. If you're gonna label something as Best Picture it better earn it. You don't want people to watch the movie and say, "it's good but not Best Picture good." Or worse, "Best Picture? That movie was awful." Things like this hurt movies and the organization. Bound for Glory could have been a hidden gem. It could have been an underrated Hal Ashby movie. Instead, it's a Best Picture nominee people forget 6 months after watching.

A movie so forgotten that when David Carradine died jerking off there wasn't a single mention of it by anyone. Death Race 2000 is more fondly remembered. Let that sink in. This is the initial New York Times obituary of David Carrdine. Tell me what the first feature film mentioned in it is? Who was this movie made for? Old people... in 1976. Even 40 years ago old people were spoiling the Academy Awards. Things don't change. I think you're forgetting that this was made about ten years after a little thing called the American Folk Revival and that Woody Gutherie had been a primary influence on a certain voice of a generation named Bob Dylan and that this was a big part of why the movie got made.
