Any Given Sunday (1999)
Any Given Sunday did for football movies what Saving Private Ryan did for World War II movies. And it's a shame that visual language had to be wasted on whatever the heck this movie was supposed to be. Is it about the game? Is it about fame? Is it about the business? Is it about teammate rivalries? Is it about the medical dangers and practices of the sport? Is it about... race? The answer is all of the above and none of the above. It's about something and it's about nothing. It's just Oliver Stone on cocaine making another movie.

Concussion (2015)Tell the truth! For all the shit Will Smith got, he's actually really good in this movie. He's also good in Suicide Squad. Why did we turn on this guy? Cause he's pimping his kids? Could be worse. He could have gotten drunk and called a female cop, sugar tits. The movie itself is okay. It's a bit over-dramatic. Everyone knows about concussions in the NFL and no one cares, the players included. That's why people mock "tell the truth." You're not curing cancer, buddy.

Concussion, Seven Pounds, Collateral Beauty, Winter's Tale. Will Smith is just really bad at trying to make prestige movies. I think the guy just has really questionable taste, he hasn't worked with a really acclaimed director since... Ali?

Friday Night LightsI fucking hate this movie. Objectively it isn't "bad." I just hate what it represents. Why is it based on a true story? Why is it based in the 80's? Why is it based on a championship team and on the year they didn't win? It would be like making a movie about the Patriots choking in 2008. Why did they make the ending with a straight face? Oh, so all these high school football stars went on to live shitty lives? Yeah, no shit. We all watched Married with Children.

I think the guy just has really questionable taste, he hasn't worked with a really acclaimed director since... Ali? Smith has been chasing that Oscar for a long time. Where the Day Takes You (1992) and Six Degrees of Separation (1993) earned him enough respectability to put being the Fresh Prince behind him, but it just hasn't materialized. Only averaging one movie per year doesn't help, either.

Peter Berg’s approach bothered me more than the content itself. The movie felt more important than it should have been.

The idea is that it was important to the players, especially in the football-mad town they live in, than it necessarily would be to an outside observer.

It’s the direction. The movie starts with the disclaimer that it’s based on a true story, as if we’re about to see something with significance. Then it tells us it’s 1988 even though it looks 100% like 2004. The rest of the movie is just an over-dramatization of stuff we already knew about Texas football. And then it ends with the most laughable montage I think I’ve ever seen.

Blue Chips (1994)Blue Chips is the Ron Shelton/William Friedkin/Nick Nolte/Al Bundy/Shaq/Penny Hardaway college basketball movie about under-the-table endorsements. It isn’t a bad movie but it’s kinda silly and spineless. Colleges make BILLIONS off these poor college students, so who cares if someone slips them a few bucks or buys them a car or pays their parents mortgage? Colleges defend not paying players by using the excuse they get a free education as if they’re getting the same education as everyone else. They ain’t majoring in engineering. They’re majoring in easy classes and going pro the first chance they get. Just pay them. Stop with the greed. It’s bad enough they’ve ruined the economy with the ridiculous high cost of education and loans that take decades to pay off, but you’re gonna pimp out athletes too? I want the Oliver Stone coked out version of Blue Chips and not the William Friedkin one.

And Cobb. And Major League. And Rookie of the Year. And Angels in the Outfield. SnoBorderZero, wanna watch some baseball movies? Anyway... Pool: The Hustler and Color of Money What was that table tennis movie with the fat guy who’s not Jack Black? Balls of Fury? 1godzillafan, go watch that. Bicycle Racing: Breaking Away and American Flyer American Flyer is the Kevin Costner movie, not the Richard Donner movie about child rape. That’s Radio Flyer. Boxing[/i]: The Harder They Fall (Bogart), Raging Bull and Champion (Kirk Douglas) To quote Evander Holyfield on 1990’s TNT, “the best boxing movies are Rocky 1, Rocky 2, Rocky 3 and Rocky 4.” Wrestling: Vision Quest, ( PG Cooper favorite) Fighting With My Family and Win-Win (Paul Giamatti) Source: Hollywood Reporter

The best wrestling movie is The Wrestler because it acknowledges wrestling is a cruel business which sucks its workers dry and leaves them with next to nothing and few other viable means to get by.
Also because Hulk Hogan lied and said Darren Aronofsky first offered him the lead role, and that's one of the great Hulk Hogan lies.

Watch Vision Quest for the Film Club and Nacho Libre for the Corona No way I'm watching Nacho Libre, and it looks like Vision Quest (which I almost just referred to as Nacho Quest) is only available digitally in Canada as a rental and I'm not paying money for that.
