"I need to clean my DVR" is something I say A LOT. To help battle my laziness, I'm gonna turn this into a game for myself - a March Madness inspired one. Basically, I'm gonna watch a bunch of movies over the next couple of weeks and pit them against each other. It'll be interesting to see which one wins.
1. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Deluxe Edition (2013) 2. Brick (2005)
3. Primary Colors (1998) 4. Life Stinks (1991)
5. Miracles (1989) 6. Lassiter (1984)
7. Lifeforce (1985) 8. The Wicked Lady (1983)
9. Wuthering Heights (1970) 10. The Happy Ending (1969)
11. Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) 12. Witness for the Prosecution (1957)

If I were voting in this the winner would probably be Witness for the Prosecution. With you voting it will probably be Lifeforce.

The film deals with some grim stuff (people are straight up murdered) but the film does keep a PG-13 rating. A hard PG-13, but PG-13 none the less.

Yea that's going to be a negative then, thanks.
I need to clean up my DVR also. I have a bad habit of seeing movies that are upcoming recording them and never watching them. I looked at it the other day and I have Lethal Weapon 3 from April of last year.

11. Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) 12. Witness for the Prosecution (1957) I'm not sure which is better. Nuremberg is ballsy and important, but it's also long and over-the-top. That German lawyer was trying to defend a bunch of Nazi's. He could have toned down his performance a bit. It was borderline comedic at times. And Burt Lancaster - I love Burt Lancaster - but come on, what were they think? And William Shatner is in the movie. William fucking Shatner. On the other hand... Witness for the Prosecution was plain silly. It's WAY more fun to watch but it also got too over-the-top. The twist ending was in an empty courthouse. Come on, really? Even Keyser Soze had the good sense to leave the police station.

I'd go Witness for the comedy bits. Tempting - VERY tempting, but my gut is saying Nuremberg. I know what you're thinking. Let me explain. Nuremberg fearlessly tackled big issues and largely did a good job. Primary Colors, while it doesn't have the cinematic quality of Nuremberg, it is a very incriminating look at Bill & Hillary Clinton. Considering that Hillary COULD be the next President of the United States, this movie should be re-watched, or watched, by everyone. I don't know how accurate it is - it IS written by a journalist - but there are certain things about it that we know to be true. And those things are the reason why people aren't excited about Hillary the way they are about Bernie Sanders. Hillary has always cared more about her career than actually making the world a better place. This movie, even if it only has an ounce of truth, isn't a very flattering look at the future leader of the #1 nation. And yes, I know, Nuremberg has Nazi's - NAZI'S - but quite frankly, Nazi's are over-played. You're not gonna get many movies by liberal Hollywood that criticizes liberal politicians. Doomsday should watch, or re-watch, Primary Colors. He'll LOVE it since he leans more right than left.

The Apartment (1960) Pressure Point (1962)
This was a lot tougher than I anticipated. Both movies are kind of dumb.
In the Apartment, Jack Lemmon plays an insurance agent (or accountant - I forget), who in an attempt to move up in the company, allows his bosses to use his apartment to have affairs. One day he arrives home and finds a woman, played by Shirley MacLaine, laying unconscious on his bed. She attempted suicide after realizing that the married man she was having an affair with was only using her for sex. After saving her life, the two of them bond and fall in love.
Hey, kids, let me tell you the story of how I met your mother.
If the movie were made today, it would be a silly comedy starring Paul Rudd. The fact it's a prestige Academy Award winner for Best Picture is a tad eye rolling.
Pressure Point has its own set of problems, but it feels like a movie and not a sitcom. Sidney Poitier plays a psychiatrist who has to examine a prison inmate, played by Bobby Darin, before his parole hearing. It's 1962 and a Black man is playing the good guy and the white man is playing the bad guy. If that wasn't cutting edge enough, Pressure Point plays out like a Christopher Nolan movie with flashbacks to flashbacks and trippy dream sequences.
It sounds like I should be choosing Pressure Point, but the faux psychology and over-simplification of the characters are not easy to ignore. If the movie were less political, the white guy is literally a Nazi, and focused more on an actual story instead of two guys shouting in a room, I could have given it a pass. The Apartment is silly but it has a story with a clear beginning, middle & end and has character development.

Dude, The Apartment is one of the best movies ever. It might actually be Wilder's best film. I think you're the first person to not be entirely swept up in that film's charm and wit. Shame on you.

The Apartment (1960)Pressure Point (1962) True Confessions (1981) Eye of the Needle (1981)The Apartment (1960)Eye of the Needle (1981) EYES OF LAURA MARS (1978Name the movie Irvin Kershner directed before making Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980). The answer is Eyes of Laura Mars (1978). Inspired by the works of Mario Bava and Dario Argento, Eyes of Laura Mars is an American interpretation of the Italian's giallo genre. Basically, an old-fashioned murder mystery combined with 1960's New Wave sexuality and 1970's slasher horror. The movie follows the story of Laura Mars (Faye Dunaway), a New York fashion photographer who likes to depict sex and violence in her work, and whose life is turned upside down when a serial killer uses her pictures as inspiration for his murders. To make matters worse, whenever there's a new victim, she gets visions of their death from the killer's point-of-view. This is what makes Eyes of Laura Mars an interesting movie - it's visually fun to watch. The story and characters are run-of-the-mill, apparently ruined by the meddling of notorious producer Jon Peters, but Kershner's eye for cinematography elevates what could have been a nonsensical shooting script. There's also the added bonus of a "young" Tommy Lee Jones as the detective who's trying to catch the killer while also romancing the leading lady. So if you ever get the chance, check out Eyes of Laura Mars. It's worth watching at least once. Never even heard of this. Despite the acting powers of Robert De Niro and Robert Duvall, and a plot based on the Black Dahlia murder case, True Confession is a snoozefest. Most people who watch the credits of Return of the Jedi ask themselves: who the fuck is Richard Marquand? If you were alive and old enough in 1983 you may have known the answer. His previous film was a 1981 World War II spy thriller titled Eye of the Needle. It stars Donald Sutherland as a Nazi spy trying to deliver information about D-Day to the Germans. He spends the first hour of the movie killing all the people chasing him and the second hour in hiding and having sex with a bored housewife. The film is trashy in content but not so much in execution. Cinematographer Alan Hume, who worked on Roger Moore's three James Bond movies from the 1980's, gives it that elegant-yet-grounded look that blurs the line between a sophistication and unsophistication. Both Marquand and Hume were hired for Return of the Jedi and I can see George Lucas' reasoning. He wanted to sell toys but not make it obvious. He wanted schlock but not make it obvious. With Eye of the Needle these guys proved they could do it.

D.C. Cab (1983) Gung Ho (1986)
The Apartment (1960) Gung Ho (1986)
Co-written and directed by Joel Schumacher, of Batman & Robin infamy, D.C. Cab is less of a movie and more of a series of wacky scenes edited together to create the illusion of a movie. I don't hate it. It's actually a lot of fun. But it ain't gonna win any prizes.
Gung Ho, starring Michael Keaton of Batman fame, is a childhood favorite of mine. Glad to report it still holds up. It's probably more relevant than ever before. Directed by Ron Howard, it tells the story of a Pennsylvania town on the brink of collapse after the car factory shuts down. It's what happened to Detroit around that time period and what continues to happen in many of the states that voted for Donald Trump. Luckily, Michael Keaton talks a Japanese company into re-opening the factory. Unluckily, there's a culture clash. The Americans are loud and obnoxious. The Japanese are strict, humorless and slaves to their work. Bleeding heart liberals will complain that the film doesn't present the Japanese in the best light, but let's be real, the movie is spot on. That's not to say the Japanese are the bad guys here. The point of Gung Ho is that the Americans and the Japanese put their flaws aside and work together for the greater good. But there's also an anti-corporate undercurrent that makes the film resonate. Yes, the Japanese have ridiculous work ethics but the Americans are equally ridiculous for letting a town fall apart because of ONE job. I think when people talk about the good ol' days they're referring to the era of small businesses, strong communities and families. Those ARE values we've lost. But before you think Gung Ho is sappy, rest assured, it isn't. That's what seals the deal. It's realistic, has good humor and a lovable cast. It's entertainment with heart and important things to say.

Black Eagle is either a James Bond spoof or a James Bond knock off or both. The movie can't decide. Johnny Handsome stars Mickey Rourke as an ugly guy who turns attractive. In real life the opposite happened. Both movies are shitty but Johnny Handsome is at least... consistent? Although Black Eagle is the one I'll probably remember in 6 months. It has a tuxedo wearing baboon who drives a tank and kills Nazi's.

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) Dead Poets Society (1989)
Good Morning Vietnam is a nice blend of funny Robin Williams and serious Robin Williams. It also sets itself apart from other Vietnam movies by staying away from the jungles and putting a spotlight on the locals. Dead Poets Society has good performances, some nice visuals and music but it's ultimately a prestige Oscar drama. I'll go for the more lively and interesting film.

Love Potion No. 9 (1992) Phat Beach (1996)
Two biochemists (one played by an ugly and scrawny Sandra Bullock) invent a love potion but then realize the only ones they love are each other. How sweet.
From the creator of Entourage (seriously) comes the Black comedy about two youths selling sunglasses at a beach resort. Featuring a cameo by Coolio!
I guess I'll go with Phat Beach. It's a dumb movie but amusing and it's low-budget has charm.

Waterworld (1995) The Edge (1997)
Terrible acting ruined what could have been a pretty cool Mad Max knock-off.
Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin versus a bear. Nuff said.
