When I reach Octopussy I kind of want to watch it twice. Just so I can say "You know whats great about you English? Octopussy. Man, I must have seen that movie... twice."

Octopussy isn't a good movie. It used to be one of my favorites, but I don't have the patience for it anymore. It has a long running time and a paper thin story. That's not a good combination. The action scenes are spectacular - some of the best in the franchise - but that's not enough for me to give it a passing grade.

THUNDERBALL (1965)
On my quest to watch the rest of the Bond films I haven't yet seen (in addition to re-watching the ones my memory is hazy on), I ended up liking Goldfinger more than Dr. No and From Russia With Love, and Thunderball pretty much keeps that ball rolling, but Goldfinger is still my favorite Connery film up to this point. I'm still not sure if I'm all that crazy about the Spectre and Blofeld stuff, but the plot of this movie was still fairly entertaining. I thought the first half hour or so was really tight and fun, then while the middle slows down a little bit too much, things then pick back up for a very enjoyable Third Act. Now, let me go ahead and get this out of the way: what the fuck was with that jet pack in the opening action sequence? When I saw that, I started to get worried because I'm really not much of a fan of this franchise's gadget-heavy elements, but thankfully, that was the worst offender of that here and it was out of the way very quickly. As for the underwater climax of this film...yeah, it's pretty awesome, especially considering the time at which the movie was made. An underwater fight can sound silly, but this movie pulled it off well. Sean Connery is as cool as ever in his role and Largo made for a decent villain but again, like Goldfinger, while I liked the movie overall, nothing about it really struck me as being especially good. Well, okay, the underwater climax, but the rest of Thunderball is mainly just a good spy adventure, nothing more or nothing less.

The jetpack is one of the few James Bond gadgets that's actually real. That's a real guy floating through the air in the opening scene. It makes the scene standout and is very memorable. And this is a topic we'll re-visit when Ian finally watches Octopussy.

The fact that the jetpack was real IS admittedly pretty cool, but it still seemed pretty silly. Though from what I've heard of some of the upcoming movies, that's only the tip of the iceberg. :/

That's ok, we all make mistakes, even really terrible ones.
But yeah, she's definitely one of my top 5 Bond girls. Every scene she's in kills me in that little fortune teller outfit.

That's only the tip of the iceberg. You Only Live Twice is on Netflix Streaming, so I'll be watching that in the next few days sometime. But I'm aware Moonraker has worse space stuff.

And I may have never gotten through puberty without her, so thank the lord for Broccoli. Then again there was Phoebe Cates...

YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967)
IanTheCool, we're in complete agreement about a Bond movie yet again.
I've liked the previous two Bond movies before this, Goldfinger and Thunderball, but while You Only Live Twice isn't without its positives, it also contains a good amount of things common to this franchise that I'm just not crazy about. Let's get my complaints about this film out of the way first: the second half. In the second half of this film are quite a few things that took away from my overall enjoyment. I like my James Bond movies to be as grounded as possible, so all the stuff dealing with Blofeld's space-related scheme seemed silly to me. But most of all, I think the film spends way too much time in Japan, to the point where those scenes feel sort of disjointed from the rest of the movie and even slow the pacing down somewhat. Also, Bond's "surgery" to become Japanese for that is ridiculous; you can hardly see any difference on him. One more thing, was it just me, or did Bond's plan to fake his own death ultimately feel pointless in the grand scheme of things?
As for the rest of the movie, it's pretty good. The first half moves along very well and contains some good scenes. Normally, stuff like the magnet in the helicopter picking up the car in the middle of the chase scene and the mini-helicopter Bond uses for surveillance would bother me, but they were incorporated pretty well. The mini-helicopter especially struck me as one of those silly Bond gadgets, and I can sense the franchise gradually start to lean more heavily on elements like that, but at least here it led to an awesome aerial dogfight scene. The first half is essentially the kind of Bond film I prefer, while the second half is the kind that makes me sort of roll my eyes. Basically, I like it when the franchise focuses being sleek, cool spy movies and not showcases for gadgets. You Only Live Twice falls squarely on the middle ground between the two.

Ian's Bond Education The Man With the Golden Gun
I was a little worried that I was gonna hate every Roger Moore film, but I didn't hate this one. I kind of liked the simple story of Bond vs. a hitman idea. It felt scaled back in a good way. Though there was some ridiculous parts, like the cutting-edge, hair-brained idea of "solar" power. Like that's a thing. There is one moment which I really hated in this movie, which of course is the return of the Louisiana sherrif. Honestly, he just happens to be touring China? And joins Bond for a car chase, just because? As if car chases in general aren't awful enough, we have to have this guy back. But it was cool having Christopher Lee as the titular villain. All in all, it wasn't terrible. Somewhere between a 6 and a 7.

The first half is really strong, but the second half is very silly. I feel like they combined two different scripts and Roger Moore's performance is uneven.

Awful movie.
