Ian's Bond Education Diamonds are Forever
What was that?? Honestly, what a mess of a movie. The directing was terrible, the side characters were some of the worst I've seen, the plot was... who cares, and the charm of those 60 Bond films I just watched a bunch of was simply not present. Honestly, what was with those two henchmen?? And Bambi and Thumper? I just shook my head with the ridiculousness of it all. The Bond girls were awful, a fact accentuated by the terrible performances by the actresses. And Blofeld? He lost pretty much any air of mystery or intrigue that shrouded him in the earlier films. It astounded me how bad this film was. What was with that moon landing rehearsal or whatever it was? And how off-tone was the crematorium scene? And he didn't even find a clever way out of it, someone just let him out. So stupid. So, so stupid. I honestly have no idea how the franchise survived this. Was this movie actually well received?? 2/10

Yeah, it's a piece of shit. Though it might have my favorite joke in the franchise:
"I didn't know there was a pool down there."
There's also"
"Oh my God, you just killed James Bond!" "Is THAT who that was?!"

Diamonds Are Forever is hilarious - and yes - it was successful. If you hated this movie, don't bother with Roger Moore. Just skip to Timothy Dalton. The Bond series was "funny" for the next 14 years. The lone exception being For Your Eyes Only in 1981.

Live and Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun and Moonraker are worse than Diamonds Are Forever. I would also argue that Octopussy is worse since that movie is pretty bland except for a few scenes that are franchise highlights.

Moonraker and A View to a Kill are worse than Diamonds are Forever, but otherwise that's it. Diamonds are Forever is abysmal. Also let's not throw Roger Moore under a bus. The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only are both great.

The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only are both great. I'm not throwing Roger Moore under the bus. He kept the franchise alive for several years. Moonraker, despite being crap, is one of the most successful Bond movies. And I agree that The Spy Who Loved Me is one of the best. I usually rank it 3rd or 4th best. But I don't expect Ian to enjoy any of his movies. He has already made it clear that he's not a fan of the "bigger" and more "light-hearted" Bond movies. And both of those descriptions fit the Roger Moore era.

Daniel Craig blames Austin Powers, and not Die Another Die, for the "super serious" Bond movies: www.yahoo.com/movies/daniel-craig-blame-austin-powers-for-the-super-104242883007.html"We had to destroy the myth because Mike Myers fucked us," the actor told Bond fan publication MI6, referring to Myers’ remarkably successful Austin Powers series. ”I am a huge Mike Myers fan, so don’t get me wrong, but he kind of fucked us, made it impossible to do the gags.” "What I love and what I really wanted to achieve with Skyfall was a level of fantasy, it’s one of the less violent ones, there’s less blood, and people aren’t dying in a horrible way, and it feels like much more of a family movie, and they should be family movies,” he said. "I don’t want to go ludicrous and we’ve got to keep them in reality, but Christ almighty, the world’s fucking weird and there’s plenty we can start mining and taking out," he promised. "If Blofeld turned up again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing."

I think Daniel Craig's legacy will be shitty Bond titles. Quantum of Solace? Spectre? Ugh.
Pierce Brosnan had the best ones. GoldenEye. Tomorrow Never Dies. The World Is Not Enough. Die Another Day.
Sean Connery had good ones too, but Dr. No is a silly title. Roger Moore also had good ones, but they were bottom of the barrel. For Your Eyes Only. The same can be said for George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton. OHMSS. Licence to Kill. Plus, in the case of Moore, Octopussy sounds like a joke title. Can you imagine being alive in 1983 and hearing that title for the first time? Octopussy! I'm sure you would have started laughing.

Spectre? Yeah that's pretty bad. Maybe not "The Force Awakens" or "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" bad, but certainly not good.

According to a recent poll... Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender are the favorites to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Of those only Fassbender really works for me and even then I think he's too big of a star for it. The others to play the character have been known, yes, but I wouldn't say that they were already A-list movie stars prior to being Bond except maybe Connery.

I like how there was only maybe one shot of Diamonds Are Forever in that whole montage.
I've heard those same names. Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy might be okay but they're already big, big names like Sno said. Idris Elba is a name that's being bandied around but once Craig is done with Spectre and whatever Bond follows (he's contracted for one more after Spectre) IF he decides to vacate the role Elba will be pushing 50 which might be a little long in the tooth (I know I know, Roger Moore was in his late 40s in Live and Let Die, yadda yadda yadda).

I don't want Hardy or Elba. Fassbender could be good. If Christian Bale was younger he would be good. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is an interesting idea as well.

I've decided to make my way through the rest of the Bond films I've yet to see, as well as re-watching those I have already, but my memory is fuzzy on. Starting off with...
GOLDFINGER (1964)
Okay, now we're talkin'. The first two entries into the James Bond franchise, Dr. No and From Russia With Love, honestly didn't do much for me, but Goldfinger is a welcome step in the right direction. I wouldn't rate it as highly as most others seem to have, but I was nonetheless more caught up in Sean Connery's third outing as Bond than I was his first two efforts. I think most of that is owed to a much tighter story and pacing this time around. The plot moves along quite nicely and doesn't waste too much time, thanks to a 109-minute runtime as opposed to the previous installment's 130, but also, the story is just much more engaging and entertaining this time. I also quite enjoyed the action scenes/setpieces considerably more. But also, I think my liking Goldfinger in comparison to its two predecessors has a lot to do with this film keeping the elements I wasn't too crazy about in those to a minimum. For example, the gadgets. Here, there's only a few of them and the ones that are in are used effectively at key moments. Also, it was nice to have a villain (and henchman) that was more stand-alone in the grand scheme of things. Maybe a lot of this was the work of director Guy Hamilton, whose style I prefer over Terence Young's; basically, Goldfinger felt more fun in comparison with Young's films up to this point.
I consider myself a little more optimistic about continuing on with the Bond franchise now, but I noticed that Terence Young returned for the next movie, Thunderball, so we'll see how that turns out for me.
