Miles Morales is Spider-Man in the movie, not Peter Parker.

While I've enjoyed the Miles Morales incarnation of Spider-Man, I don't think it's going to go over particularly well with the general movie going audience. While the key event that turned Peter Parker into Spider-Man was the death of Uncle Ben, that key moment for Miles was the death of Peter Parker. I see this as a Catch-22. If Lord & Miller remove the death of Peter from the story, they they betray Miles' character and make him into someone he's not. If Lord & Miller include Peter's death in the film, it's not going to go over well with non-comics fans (which is almost everyone). Sony is taking a huge risk, and I suspect it may not be going to pay off.

If Sony only manages TMNT (2007) numbers at the box office ($95 mil worldwide), then the movie will be considered a failure. Sadly, that may not be such a bad thing. If fans want Spider-Man to continue to be handled by Marvel Studios, then all of these Spider-Verse spin-offs that Sony is doing on their own need to fail.

If Sony only manages TMNT (2007) numbers at the box office ($95 mil worldwide), then the movie will be considered a failure. It depends on the budget. Sony cartoons are made in the $75-85 million range. If Cartoon Spidey sticks to that price tag it could end up breaking even. 2007 TMNT was a decade ago. Inflation + 3D + a stronger international market opens up business. This movie could reasonably make $200+ million worldwide. Add in home media and airings on Disney-owned television and it'll do fine. It doesn't need to do Spider-Man: Homecoming numbers. If it does $70 million domestically (which is possible with 3D) and $150 million internationally (which is Smurfs money), Sony will be happy.

It looks like they're going to really play up the Spider-Verse angle. Lots of different Spidey's scattered across dimensions.

I saw the trailer on the big screen recently, and the animation quality is really low. Direct to video level.

I've seen the trailer on the big screen twice, and there's something about the animation that I didn't notice on the internet: it's jerky like they're trying to emulate stop motion, similar to what the Lego Movies do.
I really don't think it works here. The Lego Movies get away with it because of their use of toys as the main characters, but once you use human characters it looks like shit.

Well, it was a good trailer. Some of the animation still looks as though they're using limited animation, while other parts don't. Now that there's a clearer idea of what this movie is about, I think it may have potential. Sadly, any potential for Into the Spider-Verse at the box office is going to be crushed by Mary Poppins and Bumblebee. Sony really screwed the pooch on the release date. If they didn't spend too much money on it, they should be able to make a profit on it from selling the broadcast rights and home video sales later on.
