How much media coverage did Whitey get outside of Boston? Did you know of him before his arrest? Before The Departed? Before the FBI informant stuff emerged?

Nothing on the news that I recall, not the local news I mean. I used to watch a lot of true life crime stuff so I had run across him on one or two of those shows, probably on A&E or something like that.

Question for the rest of you: How much media coverage did Whitey get outside of Boston? Did you know of him before his arrest? Before The Departed? Before the FBI informant stuff emerged? I had no idea who he was before The Departed was released. I also didn't know about Donnie Brasco before that movie was released, and since that was during the era when the Internet was starting to go mainstream, the thought of "Google him" didn't even pop into my head so I read the three books that were available at the time: Donnie Brasco, Deep Cover and Mobbed Up. The other two books are fictional and even reference Johnny Depp which is really stupid. I remember when Johnny Depp was on Inside the Actor's Studio he said Donnie Brasco was in the audience and James Lipton almost shit his pants. LOL. Anyway... sorry for getting off-track. |

Bulger was captured in Santa Monica, CA which is one of my frequent hangout spots. One of my close friends lives just a couple blocks from the apartment where he was captured. I knew who he was well before so I was amazed that they found him there. A lot of people thought he would never be captured and even doubted whether he was still alive..
