I think I have officially experienced every single car problem.
Flat tire Dead battery Broken engine belt Broken tail pipe Broken brakes And this morning, broken accelerator.
But I guess I should be grateful that my car has never caught on fire and exploded.

I use to have a cargo van, and its engine caught on fire while I was at a gas station. Didn't blow up. People were yelling at me to get outta there when I jumped into the back to save my guitar. That was a fun experience.

That was a fun experience. If you didn't live in Ohio, and there was no guitar involved, I would be getting goosebumps right now. A few years ago, I was in a red light and the car in front of me caught on fire. We were literally next to a gas station with a car wash and the car wash workers ran towards the car with buckets of water and put out the fire. That's the most exciting thing I've ever experienced at a red light. And back in 2001, I was working at the warehouses of Sears. The main warehouses, not the store backroom or whatever, and it was located in a warehouse district so there was always trucks on the freeway. And one morning a truck races past me at over 100 mph and it was on fire. I have no idea where that truck was headed or what the driver was planning on doing but I was shocked. Can you imagine your vehicle being on fire and your reaction is to drive faster? I laugh just thinking about it.

I remember a long time ago, I went to a local movie theater and when finished, went to Taco Bell with my father. We were sitting there enjoying our garbage tacos somehow, and this car in traffic just caught on fire. It burned up so fast, and the smell was something I have not forgotten. It was an awful smell. Fire trucks came and put it out, but that car was charred.

It began to engulf the engine, and all the hoses inside melted, but the fire department showed up and doused it.

I have no idea where that truck was headed Not where but WHEN It takes 88 mph to time travel, so this was more Mad Max than anything else. I was on the freeway of a warehouse district. At least 70% of the vehicles that travel through that area are trucks. It was very post-apocalyptic when that truck on fire drove past me.

Well never had one catch on fire but have had to deal with the following:
Flat Tires - Too many to count Coolant - Busted hoses, bad radiator, bad thermostats, etc Exhaust - Bad cats, O2 sensors, muffler fell off once Transmission - Only one bad one, traded it in before fixing =) Brakes - Several pad/rotor changes but nothing major Suspension - Broken Tie Rod, Bad Shocks Electrical - Several dead batteries, battery cables Motor - Blew a motor purposely because of a coolant leak that I knew would get me a new engine under warranty
I have owned the following vehicles, starting from my first:
1991 Chevy Camaro RS 1996 Chevy S10 2000 Chevy Blazer LS 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo SS 2006 Dodge Durango SLT 2010 Dodge Caravan SE 2001 Pontiac Trans-Am 2004 Dodge Stratus
My favorite of the bunch was the Trans-Am, and then the Durango. The Stratus was used as a work vehicle, long drives to fix servers all over south Georgia.
I am a car guy, did the majority of the work on most of my vehicles including all upgrades. The Trans-Am was my most upgraded toy. It had custom exhaust, LS6 manifold, LS2 heads, CAI, sport suspension, programmed, and Z06 wheels.
Here is a video of it on the dyno
I wish I would have never sold it but money got tight so it had to go. My next project will be another 01 Trans-Am or a 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8. Might be another year or two but that is the plan.

I've had the same truck since I was 16. I turn 30 in a hair over a month. I've had dead batteries, a cracked radiator, my cat converter was stolen a couple years ago and a few years before that the truck itself was stolen and found about 5 weeks later. It's still moving but it's noticeably wearing thin with a few new clunks and bumps. I'm taking it in at the end of the week and hopefully there's not too much to repair other than maintenance. I was thinking of getting a new car over the past few months (eyeballing the 2015 Mustang) but since my job status is changing within the next week or so that puts a damper on any new vehicle plans for the time being.

I've never had to drive a domestic car, so my mechanical troubles with cars has been limited. Worst I experienced was a lot of glitchy technology on a Jetta.

Odd because I dated a girl who drove a 96ish Jetta and I spent more time replacing parts on it than I did putting parts in her

Not saying imports are immune to issues, but based on my experience with the cars I've driven and stories I've heard from people who drive other cars it seems like they spend more time in the auto shop than I do.

I also worked for Bekkers Imports over in Albany, Ga for a few years. Bekkers was one of, if not the first to start importing grey market parts for American BMWs and Mercedes. They specialized in performance upgrades and styling upgrades. Both are amazing manufacturers but I took calls daily on replacement parts for DIYers. Same shit I was replacing on my "lowly" domestics.
Be real about it. No manufacturer, foreign or domestic, makes a perfect car. They all have defects, recalls, and shitty craftsmanship from time to time. I love American muscle but that does not blind me to the foreign market. In fact for a long time I was considering buying an E60 M5, with the amazing V10 engine and putting an Eisenmann Race exhaust on it. Without a doubt one of the best sounding road legal vehicles in history.
So lets not get into a foreign vs domestic discussion because it never ends pretty and no one ever wins.

Calm the calamity in your mammaries. I wasn't trying to start a debate. You listed all the domestic cars you had driven and listed off all the troubles you've had. I said I haven't had the same experience and I drive different cars.

I've had the same truck since I was 16. I turn 30 in a hair over a month. Same here. My car is from 1994 and my grandfather paid $3,000 for it when it was still new-ish. And with all the mechanical problems I've had over the past decade, I'm sure I've spent more than $3,000 on it. The tail pipe is probably the worst thing that ever happened to my car. I still have nightmares about it. It was March or April of 2011 and I was at a red light at 9am and when the light turned green I pressed on the accelerator and an explosion of smoke burst through the tail pipe. It fucked up the car behind me. It was all full of dust. I felt super bad. And my car literally broke down right there in the middle of rush hour. It was a disaster. Remember Jim Carrey's car in The Mask? That was literally my car at that moment. The tail pipe got burned and had to be replaced. The smoke was associated with other issues and those other things had to be fixed. It cost over $1,000 to make repairs. It was the only time I had serious thoughts about getting a new car.

08 Honda Civic checking in (only car I've ever owned, didn't get a license until I was 18 though to save on insurance). Never had a problem so far. Aside from other people side swiping my poor girl. Knock on wood though. Needs new brakes, just passed 67k in miles.

Sounds like bad muffler bearings. Maybe. I don't remember. But it literally sounded like a bomb had gone off. I had a mini heart attack when I heard it. If I never again hear that noise while driving a car, I'll be grateful.

I've never even had a lesson. And I won't have one unless I get some bird pregnant. (Ideally this will never occur.)

Cars, for me, are an unfathomably dull subject. If it takes you from point A to point B efficiently, then who gives a shit.

I consider myself a car enthusiast. My time getting my hands dirty working and actually working on a car has been limited, but I still like being around and learning about them. Driving aimlessly to relax or take my mind off things has been one of my favorite activities since I first got my license. My friends and I often go what we call "country driving" which involves driving on dirt road and avoiding anything paved.
When traveling, I prefer to drive if I can. It's pretty amazing what sorts of features are available on cars these days. Sitting in a car and driving for 12 hours is comfortable with all of the bells and whistles you have to pick from on a new car.

Driving aimlessly to relax or take my mind off things has been one of my favorite activities since I first got my license. Mine too, except when gas prices are too high. In that case... I just go to a park, listen to music and walk around.
