Geostorm is a tough act to follow, but it looks like a noble effort.

I enjoyed the book immensely, but that trailer isn't really inticing me to watch the movie. Too J.J. Abrams/Michael Bay and not enough Spielberg.

It's very poor. It looks like World of Warcraft the Movie. And it looks like YA schlock, instead of a story ABOUT children.

I loved the trailer. I'll admit that it doesn't look like a Spielberg movie, but that's on the people who cut the trailer and doesn't necessarily reflect the finished film. It looks like a fun time. The big race looks amazing. So many different iconic 80's vehicles tearing through the Sixers, and that was just what made it into the trailer. The DeLorean Time Machine, Kaneda's bike from Akira, Mad Max's Last of the V8 Interceptors, The A-Team van, Christine, and a monster truck that was probably Bigfoot. It's going to make a Fast/Furious car chase seem believable.

Looks a bit of a CGI-fest.

Looks a bit of a CGI-fest. Yeah, this SHOULD be below Spielberg but he does produce the Transformers movies so I'm not too surprised.

For once, I don't mind it being a CGI-fest, considering what it's supposed to be.

Looks a bit of a CGI-fest. Yeah, that's to be expected with a story that takes place in VR. It's kinda hard to bring an interactive video game to life without lots of CGI.

The matrix sequels though are CGI heavy.
Anyway, I've been meaning to read the book I hear good things

The Matrix is virtual reality and has less CGI than this. The Matrix was supposed to be indistinguishable from reality in order to fool people. The Oasis is supposed to be a video game in which the wildest of fantasies can be lived out, and everybody knows it's VR.

Oh this looks like its gonna be pure fan fiction nerdiness. I'm surprised Spielberg is involved. Seems like he should be above this kind of nonsense.

Oh this looks like its gonna be pure fan fiction nerdiness. Have you read the book? The book is 80s reference on top of 80s reference. There's a story and it's a fun read but the main theme is 'Remember this one thing? Here ya go!'

Not a bad book but not very memorable in my opinion.
Fucking loathed the shoehorned love story. Wish I liked this more than not, and the secret for one of the final things was so obvious I hope they change it. If the culture was so 80s obsessed everyone would be able to figure it out.
Cool short story, not that good of a book. But it was a quick and easy read and is at every library ever because there is def a neck beard ordering books in the back that has a similar fantasy.
Have anyone read any of Cline's other books? I didn't mind the style or writing, just thought the ideas were a little rushed.

I don't know the whole story - and haven't read the book - but isn't a story based on a specific nostalgic period doomed to have a severely limited shelf life?
This quote springs to mind...
But magnified.
Readers: How can this tale connect to the billions who don't understand all the references?

Not every work is meant to be appreciated throughout the ages. There are no doubt aspects to the works of Shakespear that are missed by modern audiences. I seriously doubt that Ernest Cline wrote Ready Player One with the slightest concern about how it would be received by millenials or anyone else unfamiliar with 80's pop culture. It's a book aimed at Gen Xers, and we bought the book. As for the movie, it's got car chases, giant scorpions fighting knights on ostriches, battles between orcs, Freddie Kruger and Duke Nukem, and who knows what else. You don't need to be from the 80's to have a good time with that going on.
Besides, a lack of knowledge about pop culture by the audience hasn't hindered Family Guy. I watched that show with my oldest nephew once. He laughed at an obscure reference to Gilligan's Island. When I asked him when he had ever watched the show, he admitted that he hadn't. The boy had no idea what was supposed to be so funny. He was engaged anyway. Maybe that's very lame on his part, but as long as he's having a good time, so be it. He's hardly alone.

Alan Silvestri took over composing duties from John Williams, if I remember correctly.

Alan Silvestri is doing the music for Ready Player One while John Williams composes for The Post. The Post was made at breakneck speed (it was shot in June-July) which put its post-schedule right in the middle of RPO's.
