What is the general consensus in the US when it comes to this guy? From actual music lovers, I mean. Not the mass populace. I haven't heard a lot of his past work but I noticed he recently equaled the Beatles' record of having 14 tracks in the billboard top 100 at the same time (not that that means anything these days) so he must be having a considerable effect on a mass audience, which I was surprised by due to the fact that the tracks I have heard from him have been quite moody, well-produced and not that commercial. Is it a case of the general public having some taste for a change? I was a big fan of Take Care and, having listened to his latest album, I think he has an excellent producer(s). Also, whenever I hear his name I think of this:  Which is hilarious in of itself. |

I'm the biggest fan of Uptown Funk you'll meet, and I absolutely love the fact that the British public has made that track number one and embraced it. It gives me hope.
Mark Ronson is a one of a kind in the current pop music plane.
Bruno is incredible talented, too.
I'm surprised by your Drake comments though.
His production values are stellar, second maybe only to Kanye's. And his content and lyrics have a lot to admire. Any rapper that disowns and attempts to distance himself from the bling/bitches/gangsta stereotype gets a pass from me.

I'd also say that Uptown Funk is very derivative, in the most complimentary way. Ronson is good, but he has one particular style and he sticks to it.
Drake isn't a particularly good rapper, nor a particular good singer, but he is competent at both and has a unique way with words. I think he owes a lot to whoever produces his tracks.
So i guess he has no respect amongst genuine hip-hop fans? Interesting, seeing as he refers to himself as the successor of Lil Wayne (a rapper I never much cared for).
Give me Joe Budden and Akala any day of the week.
I would urge any rap fan to listen to this, not just for ability but the importance of the lyrics:

Yeah but who would buy that smith was ever a part of that environment? No-one. And him as his people knew that.
He and Drake are incomparable.
I see a lot of parallels with Drake and Kanye, their celebrity status is tainted but if you put all that to the side, the music they are making is of a very high quality, and that's all that should matter, ultimately.

BTW, LL Cool had some great tracks and was an awesome counterweight to the aggression of the late 80s/early 90s gangsta rap, but I don't think he's an all-time great. I'd daresay he doesn't even rap in the common fashion, he has a soulful voice and talks over laidback beats but his flow is nothing special. If you have videos to counter that I'd be happy to see/hear them.
Compared to this guy, for example, there's an epic gap in ability, message and importance (Important artists thread idea?):
I'd agree with LL's comparison with Smith, though. He just didn't have the sitcom and charisma to achieve the same results.

It's just difficult to get into Drake when there's music like this on the radio: Plenty of men like Drake, they just claim to be indifferent about him because the internet consensus is that he's softer than a silk pillow. That line he had about all the girls buying his album for the picture and all the men buying it too and saying they got it for their sisters proved to be accurate... that and his music falls into a strange middleground where it's not hard enough for the core rap fanbase but also too pop for the music critic types. |

That's his bread and butter and the source of his mega success. But I gotta give the guy credit. Beyonce and him are the only people who released a secret album and had it top the iTunes chart.

If you showed somebody this track blind who was in to hip-hop I fail to see how they wouldn't like it: Would you reject it because of the artist's past?
