By 1979, it was a weekly series airing on over 180 stations, and was the highest rated weekly entertainment series in the history of public broadcasting. Except it didn't air in the giant markets like New York and Los Angeles because, according to Ebert in his autobiography, there was some bias against Chicago. At the Movies is really the show that made Siskel & Ebert a household name. Between Tribune and Disney, their show was syndicated everywhere in America and possibly other English-speaking countries. You really can't compare the two.

Well, we can debate the 3 vs 5 thing. No one really debated it before we started. I honestly thought 5 might be too many that it wouldn't be much of a debate in any given year.

Well are there honestly 5 groundbreaking new shows every year? If so I would be much fatter from watching much more TV.
I like 3.

What made Letterman special? His format was not much different than Carson's, but he catered to a younger crowd. I don't see anything special there.

Ask anyone in the UK to name an American chat show host and he'll get the majority vote, unquestionably. He'll likely be the only one most people know. Why he's entered pop culture so much more than any of his peers - outside of the US, at least - I have no idea. That's for you guys to explain.
We'll no doubt have the same arguments we had in the Important Movies thread: does being a big part of the pop culture lexicon of a given era automatically make it/him Important?

Might be hard to see now, but Late Night was the first talk show in a long long time to subvert the genre's tropes.
You likely wouldn't have Conan, Ferguson, or Kimmel without Letterman's early days.

You should use the first post to show off the winners. Make it easy to find for people joining in on this late.

The Sopranos Freaks and Geeks Family Guy Another crappy year for TV. But if you think about it, whats a good year? How many great debuts can we actually expect in a year? There usually only are a few.

Re-doing my list:
The Sopranos Family Guy Futurama
Hmm, maybe five shows isn't a bad idea after all.

There usually only are a few. Well I pointed that out earlier. I just meant in general it was a crappy year. Not for the lack of great shows but for the lack of barely good shows.
