Hey all, I was thinking of doing a spin-off from our Important Movies thread to do a similar thread with TV shows. What we would try to do it pinpoint the most significant shows of any given year, but likely going with 3 instead of 5.
We would choose the shows based on their debut year, but we would be looking not just at that year but the entire run of the film. Again I would choose the years at random and we would try to come to a consensus of the 3.
Would anyone be up for this?
1973
1982 Cheers St. Elsewhere Cagney & Lacey Late Night with David Letterman At the Movies
1995 Drew Carey Madtv Mr. Show Newsradio Xena
1999 Sopranos Family guy Freaks and Geeks Futurama West Wing
2003 Arrested Development Chapelle's Show Mythbusters NCIS Nip/Tuck

Wikipedia gives a good reference for US tv debuts but not international tv.
Regardless, I'm down, but does anyone have a better reference point?

Worth a shot... the three show limit might be a problem in some years and may be to high in others though.

may be to high in others though. Depends on what Ian considers shows. When 2001 rolls around, are we gonna consider the 9/11 news coverage? When 1980 rolls around, are we gonna consider the infamous Hockey game between the U.S. and the Soviets? When 1963 rolls around, are we gonna consider Lee Harvey Oswald getting shot and killed on live television? Are we gonna consider cartoons, soap operas, talk shows, sketch comedy, etc?

I would say not individualized televised events. But if it has some sort of serialization to it, sure.

So no episodic television which would immediately disqualify The Simpsons. So no talk shows which would disqualify Johnny Carson, the King of Late Night for 30 years. So no sketch comedy which would disqualify Saturday Night Live and Canada's SCTV. So no variety programs which would disqualify The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. So no news programs which would disqualify the moon landing and the fall of the Berlin Wall. So no sporting events which would disqualify the Boston Red Soxs breaking "the curse."
But I'm glad soap operas are eligible since they're serialized.

As a group, can we not needlessly complicate something as we tend to do? If people want to vote for SNL or the Moon Landing, then more power to them. If people don't agree, then I guess it just doesn't win that year. Not to mention the fact that it's much easier for everybody to actually participate if we have a general list. If Ian says 1985, a year I believe a lot of us were not alive for, we can Google "best TV of 1985" and probably formulate a list based on shows we've seen and are familiar with. If we're expected to take into account news specials and one-off movie of the weeks for an entirely separate list, that's going to be much more difficult to try and account for everything.

If Ian says 1985, a year I believe a lot of us were not alive for, we can Google "best TV of 1985". Do you only watch TV shows you were alive for? How millennial of you. In all seriousness... This might be the biggest issue with this thread. I don't know how well-versed the CS community is with TV shows. JBond is 32 years old and he hasn't watched Cheers. Now imagine someone half his age. If Ramplate, Frizzo , Duke Leto and thebtskink actively participate, this MIGHT work. That's why I don't want Ian to add restrictions. If Ramplate wants to vote for Green Acres, he should be allowed to and not disqualified because it's not a serialized drama.

I've seen shows from before my time. My point was that it's much easier to refresh yourself on TV shows from a certain year than it is particularly noteworthy news broadcasts from the same year. I don't think anything should be disqualified, but I think everything should be confined to one list. You want to nominate the coverage of some news event from 2002? That's fine, but then it's competing against The Sopranos.

You want to nominate the coverage of some news event from 2002? I was referring to historical moments like the Kennedy-Nixon debate, the Kennedy assassination, the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the September 11 attacks. You didn't need to be alive during those events to know that they were Earth changing moments captured live on television.

News events like that are a whole other issue and not what we're going for here. But if its an actual continuing program, it counts.

Here's all the TV shows I consider important for 1982.
At the Movies with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert Cagney & Lacey - Female cops. The CBS Morning News Cheers - One of the great sitcoms. Fame - Iconic theme song. Precursor to Glee. Family Ties - Michael J. Fox. Birth of Young Republicans. Knight Rider - Pop culture show. Late Night with David Letterman. It changed the genre. Newhart - It's Bob Newhart. What can I say? Remington Steele - Pierce Brosnan. Feminist show? Silver Spoon - Rich kid learns lessons. Starcade - Precursor to Nick Arcade. St. Elsewhere - Denzel Washington. Square Pegs - Precursor to Freaks & Geeks
Those are the shows that debut in 1982. As for shows that were still around and relevant, there's...
60 Minutes American Bandstand Dallas Dynasty Hill Street Blues Magnum, P.I. Saturday Night Live: The Eddie Murphy Years Sesame Street Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends The Facts of Life The Today Show The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson
