Absolute Power (Clint Eastwood, 1997)- 5/10 I had forgotten how preposterous Absolute Power is, even for Trump's America, although its been 6 months. Basic premise is that the U.S. President, played by Gene Hackman (a dead person according to Doomsday ), has a mistress killed and the secret service goes through great lengths to cover it up. Let's break it down. Clint Eastwood plays a jewel thief who witnesses the murder. I don't think the President would go to anyone's home to get laid. You need a controlled environment. Even Bill Clinton got his dick sucked in the White House. The Secret Service kills the woman because things got rape-y and she tried to fight back. The Secret Service heared the commotion, barged in and killed her. There was probably better ways to cover this up than cleaning things up and getting the heck out of there. Have they not seen Forensic Files? This shit never ends well. Lastly, Clint Eastwood as a jewel thief? This is the era that gave us Sean Connery as Catherine Zeta Jones lover, so I shouldn't complain too much, but geesh. It's incredibly ridiculous. Also his art thief persona never matters in the movie. It's literally just used as a contrived plot device to have him in the home when the murder happens. William Goldman wrote the screenplay which shocked me because it's not good at all. The only thing that saved the movie from my wrath is that it's better than True Crime and Blood Work, but that's a very low bar because those two are both absolutely terrible. But it's not good. Also it wastes Laura Linney and Gene Hackman in the same movie. Not cool. |

Bernard Hermann's work in Obsession was fantastic. Schrader's script doesn't measure up to Hermann and De Palma's bravado which saves the picture from teetering into nonsense. It's got pacing and storytelling issues, but Hermann and De Palma make it work. Schrader disowned the movie. I think De Palma rewrote his whole script. |

Seen that too. Couldn't dig up what I rated it. Not a fan of it. I was surprised to see it so well received on Letterboxd. — — — — A Perfect World is Clint Eastwood's directorial follow-up to Best Picture Oscar-winner Unforgiven and it shows. It's a crime drama starring Kevin Costner as an escaped convict who kidnaps a child and uses him as a hostage while on the run from a Texas ranger played by Eastwood. I watched this movie when it came out and remember it more fondly than it really is. What sticks out in your mind is "the bonding" between Costner and the child, but the movie has a shit ton of fluff. The Eastwood character and his section of the story are unnecessary. You didn't need the pursuer to be a fleshed character getting in the way of the drama. There could have also be trims elsewhere, like there's a subplot about the governor running for re-election. Eastwood doesn't normally waste his time with shit like this but I guess that Oscar messed with his head. His movie after this one was The Bridges of Madison County. These were dark times, my friend. Pre-Unforgiven Eastwood would have made a really good tightly made movie. |
