In a move that could alter the minimum wage debate and improve the image of the world's largest retailer, Walmart announced it will raise the baseline wage of its current store employees to $10 per hour, bringing pay hikes to an estimated 500,000 workers.

The company said in an announcement on Thursday that it would raise its wage floor to $9 in April, followed by a second boost to $10 by next February.

The decision follows similar moves by other major retailers such as Gap and IKEA, but the sheer size of Walmart sets the company apart. The Arkansas-based retailer is the largest private-sector employer in the U.S., with an estimated 1.4 million employees, and it is largely seen as a trend-setter in the retail industry.

BENTONVILLE, AR—In a nationwide event this Thursday, Wal-Mart stores in more than 4,000 locations will be slashing customers’ throats from sunrise until sundown, the retailer announced. “In every section of the store, whether it’s electronics or produce, we’ll be cutting customers’ throats from ear to ear!” an official Wal-Mart press release read in part, adding that the throat-slashing event is not to be missed and is a once-in-a-lifetime offer. “We expect hundreds of thousands of customers to come out and experience our deep cuts across their internal and external carotid arteries, so get here early. And bring the kids!” The statement confirmed that in addition to slashing customers’ throats, the store would also be cutting arms and legs down by half.

The question is whether the owners care. I don't think they do, and just generally consider the people to be replaceable. Wal-Mart caved to this base rate thing because there's been SO much pressure and negative publicity about them.

I will say that working for Wal-Mart at a minimum wage rate is better than working for Ralph's or Albertsons or some other grocery store as a bagger with a minimum wage rate (like I did when I was in high school.) If you're working for one of those grocery stores you get minimum wage and no benefits, and then on top of that the union takes a cut out of your paycheck even though they have done you zero favors.

I agree with bbf2. When I was in high school I worked as a bagger/cashier/stocker/eventual manager at the local Piggly Wiggly here and we were unionized. It was goddamn terrible. I really hated having dues taken out every other week or once a month or however frequent it was when it was a job that I could have walked away from any day without a care in the world. I didn't care at all about it.

There was a time when I would have loved to make $10/hour when I was at the Pig or Best Buy. I'm surprised Walmart caved though, literally every single person they employ who is going to benefit from this rate change is completely replaceable. It's not like these are skilled employees they were concerned might walk if they don't see a raise.

Maybe this will alienate me here, but as a product of a lot of years of school and a lot of effort and hard work I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who are upset at what they're being paid at Walmart.

Walmart Closing 154 U.S. Stores In 2016

Walmart will close 269 stores worldwide, including 154 in the United States, as part of what the company is calling “portfolio management,” Walmart announced Friday.

The global retail giant, known for being a one-stop-shop for buying just about anything at a discounted rate, said financial performance and “strategic alignment with long-term plans” went into consideration when considering which locations to close.

The closings will affect 16,000 workers globally and 10,000 in the United States who will have priority for open positions at nearby stores that remain open.

The company also says it has plans to open as many as 165 locations in the United States during the company’s next fiscal year, which begins in February.

The announcement also marked the end of Walmart Express, smaller, convenience store-sized stores designed to compete with chains like 7-Eleven and WaWa.

All 102 pilot Walmart Expresses will close.

“Closing stores is never an easy decision, but it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future,” Doug McMillon, Walmart’s president and CEO, said in a press release.

“It’s important to remember that we’ll open well more than 300 stores around the world next year. So we are committed to growing, but we are being disciplined about it.”

Texas will be hit the hardest, with 29 stores scheduled to close. North Carolina is set to lose 17 stores. Alabama and Arkansas will lose 11 stores each.

In addition to the Walmart Expresses, 23 Neighborhood Markets, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam’s Clubs will be among the U.S. closings, the company said.

Internationally, closings include 60 in Brazil and 55 “primarily small, loss-making stores in other Latin American markets.”

More than 95 percent of the closings are within an average of 10 miles of another Walmart, the company said. Affected employees will receive 60 days pay, severance if qualified and resume and interview training.

I've never been to Costco. Of the warehouse stores, I've been to Sam's Club, "BJ's", and if it counts, Ikea. But if Costco is truly a badass company, I'll start supporting them. They're opening a store near my home, so it'll be easy to do so.
