Wal-Mart Announces Plan To Slash Customers’ ThroatsBENTONVILLE, AR—In a nationwide event this Thursday, Wal-Mart stores in more than 4,000 locations will be slashing customers’ throats from sunrise until sundown, the retailer announced. “In every section of the store, whether it’s electronics or produce, we’ll be cutting customers’ throats from ear to ear!” an official Wal-Mart press release read in part, adding that the throat-slashing event is not to be missed and is a once-in-a-lifetime offer. “We expect hundreds of thousands of customers to come out and experience our deep cuts across their internal and external carotid arteries, so get here early. And bring the kids!” The statement confirmed that in addition to slashing customers’ throats, the store would also be cutting arms and legs down by half. www.theonion.com/articles/walmart-announces-plan-to-slash-customers-throats

If Wal-Mart is doing it, that means that Target will have to follow suit at some point.

Well, seeing as how I already make more than $10 an hour, my pay, unfortunately, wouldn't be affected that much. It would help out some of my fellow team members though.

Don't all wages get adjusted when minimum wage changes?

It depends. If you're a company under the microscope and vilified like Wal-Mart then it could be a case of a rising tide lifting all boats.

Don't all wages get adjusted when minimum wage changes? Not necessarily. If you're already making above the minimum, then they don't have to adjust your wage at all.

If you're already making above the minimum, then they don't have to adjust your wage at all. I think it depends on how much more you're making. If you're the manager and getting paid $11 an hour, it would be awkward for the cashier to be making $10 an hour. I think certain managers would start bitching about that.

The question is whether the owners care. I don't think they do, and just generally consider the people to be replaceable. Wal-Mart caved to this base rate thing because there's been SO much pressure and negative publicity about them. I will say that working for Wal-Mart at a minimum wage rate is better than working for Ralph's or Albertsons or some other grocery store as a bagger with a minimum wage rate (like I did when I was in high school.) If you're working for one of those grocery stores you get minimum wage and no benefits, and then on top of that the union takes a cut out of your paycheck even though they have done you zero favors.

I agree with bbf2. When I was in high school I worked as a bagger/cashier/stocker/eventual manager at the local Piggly Wiggly here and we were unionized. It was goddamn terrible. I really hated having dues taken out every other week or once a month or however frequent it was when it was a job that I could have walked away from any day without a care in the world. I didn't care at all about it. There was a time when I would have loved to make $10/hour when I was at the Pig or Best Buy. I'm surprised Walmart caved though, literally every single person they employ who is going to benefit from this rate change is completely replaceable. It's not like these are skilled employees they were concerned might walk if they don't see a raise. Maybe this will alienate me here, but as a product of a lot of years of school and a lot of effort and hard work I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who are upset at what they're being paid at Walmart.

The only unions that work are police unions.
And I most certainly empathize with others, I realize my white privilege gave me advantages over literally millions of others.

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-03-03/costco-raising-minimum-wage-as-competition-for-workers-growsCostco Wholesale Corp. will lift its minimum wage for the first time in nine years, by a $1.50 an hour, as the labor market tightens and competitors start giving workers a raise. The second-largest U.S. retailer will start paying at least $13-to-$13.50 an hour, up from $11.50-to-$12 an hour, the company said Thursday in a conference call with analysts. The increase will cut its earnings per share in the next three months by 1 cent, and by 2 cents in the following three quarters, the Issaquah, Washington-based company said. Retailers are under pressure to boost wages as unemployment falls below 5 percent and 14 states have raised their minimum wage this year. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which operates the Sam’s Club warehouse-style chain, a Costco competitor, lifted its pay floor to $10 an hour this year and gave an increase to more than 1 million workers. Costco didn’t say how many of its 117,000 employees would get a raise.

Costco is supposedly a great place to work for people in retail. I've never been to Costco. Of the warehouse stores, I've been to Sam's Club, "BJ's", and if it counts, Ikea. But if Costco is truly a badass company, I'll start supporting them. They're opening a store near my home, so it'll be easy to do so.

The downside to Costco is that you have to use AmEx if you're using a credit card. I like using my Visa or Discover wherever I go because I get 1% cash back

yeah right now I am trying to get a job at costco. Well really anyway our oil industry died mostly so it's hard to get a job there now. I worked on call for a oil spill company but haven't worked since July.
