I have 4 kids, ages 15, 9, 7, and a toddler. I was thinking of doing a family movie night and showing them Poltergeist. My teenager is already into horror so no big deal there but is it too much for the 9 and 7 yr old girls who only watch disney/pixar type films? When I grew up I had a lack of parental supervision and two older brothers so I was introduced to the good stuff at a real early age. Phantasm, NOES, Friday the 13th etc etc. Poltergeist was nothing. However for my girls this is going to be all new territory.
So for those with kids, at what age can do you feel comfortable showing them something like Poltergeist?

Hah you joke but I was around that age when I saw it. I was about 8 when my older brother showed me Faces of Death. I turned out OK I guess.

Yep, so was I.
I remember the first time I saw it, I was pretty sick with a fever. I had intense fever dreams, followed by nightmares for several weeks straight. I'd say I came out all right but I'd be lying.

I watched The Exorcist when I was in Elementary School and that was a HUGE mistake. But movies like Poltergeist and Jaws should be fine. Movies that are more special effects than actual horror probably won't scare them. For example, I introduced the Evil Dead trilogy to my sister when she was 10 or 11 and she was never frightened. But when Paranormal Activity was released, that scared the shit out of her. And when she watched Saw on television, that also scared her. I think when horror movies are spectacle, they're not scary. I watched Chucky and Freddy Kreuger when I was like 4 or 5 and it didn't affect me at all. But I watched Psycho when I was 12 and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I think when horror movies are simple and relatable, that's when the scares creep in.

Yea I am thinking it is time, for Poltergeist anyway. Might need to hold off on The Exorcist for just a little while longer . Will give it a whirl next weekend. This weekend is Harry and the Hendersons.

Seven (and even nine) seems really young, imo.
I feel like there's probably better baby steps movies. *shrugs*

Poltergeist should be okay, especially since you'll all be watching it together.

I feel like some clarification might be in order. All of you apparently think it's good to go, but all I know is that Duke Leto said they only watch Pixar/Disney movies. Poltergeist seems like a huge leap to me.
What are the worst Rated PG-13/R movies they have been exposed to thus far? Have they watched the Indiana Jones movies yet, for example, or have they literally only been accustomed to watching family/kids movies?

No, no Indy but we have been introducing them to stuff we grew up on. Goonies, Batteries Not Included, and other 80s hits. I think Jurassic Park would be considered the scariest thing they have seen with us. No issues there. Our 9 yr old watched The Neverending Story when she was about 6 and the wolf gave her nightmares but that only lasted about a week or so. I can't really think of anything good to ease them into, I was thinking Poltergeist would be the one to start them off on but I am open to suggestions.
The girls probably won't be into Indiana Jones though.

You never know. My family is three quarters women, and they all love the Indiana Jones franchise.
Those are all movies I grew up on as well. Indiana Jones is arguably a fun family franchise of movies, but they do have horror moments that seem like a good testing ground to me. If face melting, heart-pulling, and growing-old-turning-into-a-skeleton doesn't scare them that much, then they should be fine with Poltergeist.
The idea that girls can't/won't enjoy Indiana Jones does kind of sadden me. Or stranger, that they may alternatively like something like Poltergeist instead. =\

Hah I just remembered something funny. We rented The Possession and left it in the DVD player overnight. Our 6 yr old (5 at the time) came in the next morning before we got up and started the movie and watched the opening scene before we caught her and she thought it was hilarious.
I had totally forgotten about that. She might be more ready than our 9 year old is!

I do expect the two younger ones to hop in bed with us after watching it. Hopefully that only last a day or so. I can deal with that.

I watched stuff like The original Fly when I was 9 or 10 - that scared me when he showed his face. I also watched a lot of the classic Universal monster movies, and the original Blob movie. And a lot of Alfred Hitchcock. I was about 13 when I started watching scarier stuff

Indiana Jones is good baby step, especially Temple of Doom, but Tim Burton is even better. If they can survive Beetlejuice, they can watch all the effects-driven horror movies. Universal. Hammer. Evil Dead. Freddy Kreuger.

Actually now that you mention it, we did watch Beetlejuice and Pee Wees Big Adventure. No problems with those.

Actually now that you mention it, we did watch Beetlejuice and Pee Weeks Big Adventure. No problems with those. Twilight Zone: The Movie is very flawed, but that opening scene with Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks is a classic. That's another good baby step.

Well after sleeping on it, I think they are ready for it. I had forgotten about some of the classic stuff they have seen that is kinda scary for kids that didn't scare me because I was already into the real good stuff at that age.
Thanks for the help all. Trying to groom the next generation of movie fans can be a tough job.

My parents were relativity strict about movies in our youths, though I did see Jaws 2 when I was 5 and immediately had a nightmare about a shark attacking me (but I fought back!). Though I did see stuff like The Dark Crystal, Neverending Story and The Last Unicorn well before I was 10 and it didn't frighten me in a terrified sense.

Human Centipede is pretty tame. I could baby step them into it by showing them the South Park version first.

Also, them not liking Indy isn't because they are girls. They just do not care to much for action flicks.
