TODAY IS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2018THE MOVIE OF THE DAY IS...COP LAND (1997)James Mangold, along with his cohorts Scott Frank and Michael Green, made history yesterday by becoming the first screenwriters to receive an Academy Award nomination for a superhero movie. PG Cooper celebrated. Finally, a movie about a Canadian is recognized by the Hollywood community. Doomsday was outraged. Wonder Woman should have been nominated instead. Hashtag MeToo and TimesUp. But today we're gonna give our squabbles a rest and go to the past, to a time when all your favorite actors from the 1970's hadn't become an embarrassment yet. Cop Land. Released in 1997, and forever in the shadows of L.A. Confidential, Cop Land is the movie that put James Mangold on the map. It stars Sly Stallone, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Peter Berg and that Black guy from the King of Queens. It's a dream cast for any young filmmaker and they all give amazing performances. I don't know how it didn't receive a single acting nomination at the Oscars. The movie has a simple plot. It's just about a group of corrupt New York cops living in a small town in New Jersey. Any director could have made this movie and it would have been okay-ish. It's the cast that elevated it into a top contender. If there was ever an argument to be made that there should be a Best Cast category this is it.

Cop Land is pretty legit. Too bad it was in the midst of Judge Dredd/Assassins phase of Stallone's career.

That's why I didn't take Creed too seriously. I knew Stallone wasn't gonna suddenly re-invent his career or whatever.

I remember Get Carter was supposed to be a big comeback too. It had a cool poster, it was marketed as a hardcore revenge movie. Then it was released.
There were a few years of junk before Stallone realized all he had to do was please his fanbase and he'd be set for life. Enter Rocky Balboa, Rambo, Expendables etc. Can you imagine if Stallone, Sylvester effing Stallone, had won an Oscar for Creed? That would have been so amazing. Unfortunately they thought giving it to Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies was a better pick and we all know how much people talk about THAT performance.

Nah, Bridge of Spies is not overly memorable, but it's certainly better than The King's Speech. Also it didn't win Best Picture over a plethora of more interesting, artistic, and culturally relevant films. As for Rylance; it's a subtle performance, but I think he does quite well in the part. We can argue about Stallone being snubbed but the dude was playing a character he's been doing since 1976. He does a great job, but I can see that holding him back with voters. If anyone was snubbed I'd argue it was Tom Hardy for The Revenant. As for Cop Land; it's pretty decent. Mostly I just remember noting how much Mangold clearly loves Martin Scorsese given the cast.

TODAY IS FRIDAY, JANUARY 26, 2018THE MOVIE OF THE DAY IS...MIMIC (1997)Long before Guillermo Del Toro was a serious contender at the Academy Awards, he was just a chubby director from Mexico trying to make a name for himself in Hollywood. His first time at bat was for a Mimic, a schlock-y science-fiction/horror movie starring Harvey Weinstein victim Mira Sorvino. Apparently, the roach problem in New York City got out-of-hand so the CDC create a bug that's supposed to fix the problem for them. But then that bug takes up a new form and starts killing everyone. That's it. It's all that happens. You're not watching Mimic for the story and character development. You just wanna watch some bugs kill people. In that sense the movie succeeds, but it's fair to say Del Toro has come a long way. To go from that to sea creature erotica is quite the leap.

Assault on Precinct 13 is pretty cool. Here's what I said about the film back in 2014:
Simple story; a cop, some secretaries, and some convicts are trapped in a police station because a large and armed street gang are trying to kill them. If nothing else, it's impossible not to admire John Carpenter's resourcefulness. Despite a very low budget, Carpenter makes an interesting little film and also crafts some very good action scenes. His ability to build suspense is already on display and the film almost feels like a horror movie, partially because of similarities to Night of the Living Dead. There are also some interesting dynamics to the group of people trying to survive. Carpenter's synth score is also very memorable.
On the downside, these characters are very thin, there's some weak dialogue, and at the end of the day this story doesn't amount to much. Also, much as John Carpenter's talent comes through, this isn't as thoroughly refined as future films from him, such as Halloween and The Thing. Still, this is a very enjoyable film and I'm glad I saw it.

Every time the Atlanta Hawks win a game, SnoBorderZero will be forced to watch a movie with Hawks in the title. It is the law. First up. The Sylvester Stallone classic Nighthawks. Bearded Stallone is Best Stallone.

It's not so much bad as it is... actually it is quite bad, but the reason people remember it are less for the fact that it's bad than for the fact that it's really weird. Usually when movies are bad you at least know what they were going for but I have zero clue what they wanted that thing to be.
