I think Young Frankenstein is the #1 movie that deserves a rewatch from me. I haven't watched it since I was a little kid.

Film Thirty: The Lawnmower Man (1992) The Lawnmower Man is one of the more infamous Stephen King adaptations, in part because it is legally barred from advertising itself as a Stephen King adaptation. Apparently they changed so much in adaptation that the final result bore no resemblance to the original short story and King sued to get his name taken out of the title, which is hilarious because “The Lawnmower Man” is a terrible title and there’s no reason to use it unless you’re trying to get in on the Stephen King brand. Despite that bit of infamy and the film scoring very negative reviews the movie actually seems to have done pretty decent at the box office and was especially popular overseas. It spawned a sequel and two video games and proved to be a noticeable stepping stone in the career of Pierce Brosnan. Personally, I think Stephen King was right to distance himself from it though because this movie is very weird and has aged like milk. The movie is more of a science fiction story than it is a horror movie and seems to be trying to redo Flowers for Algernon for the digital age but before the digital age even started. Virtual reality is a big part of the film and it includes a bunch of CGI renderings of VR which use all the visual effects that 1992 could conjure in order to make visuals that look like they come from a video game from 1996. I should probably note that I watched the film’s director’s cut which adds about 34 minutes to the film and that was probably a mistake… this thing did not need to be 141 minutes long. Looking back on it now it fits into a trend of dated 90s peaks at the future like The Net that just feel like complete artifacts but the technological ideas here haven’t even aged all that poorly, just their visualization. I don’t think “datedness” is really the biggest problem though, it’s just kind of a dull movie that’s not as smart as it thinks it is and kind of goes nowhere. ** out of Five
Bonus Film: Children of the Corn (2023) The Children of the Corn franchise does not exactly have a proud history and had gone deep down the direct-to-video well by the 2020s and did seem like it would be a good candidate to finally get a bigger budget reboot as these franchises go. That did not seem to go well. The movie they made played at two film festivals in late 2020 before sitting on the shelf for two solid years and then getting an unceremonious release in 2023 to basically no box office and extremely hostile reviews. In fact the movie is presently sitting at 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and while I’m certainly not going to say this movie is “good” I do think it’s at least a little more decent than that score would imply. The movie is actually as much a prequel as a remake as it eschews the “car breaks down in a cornfield” set-up of the original (and Stephen King’s novella) and instead depicts the origins of the madness with the kids rising up and killing the parents as one teenager not affected by the corn deity going up against them. The initial disagreement setting up all of this (something about farmers using hybrid seeds and opting to take farm subsidies) seems like absolute nonsense the writers made up after half reading one article about the agriculture industry and doesn’t make much sense. The film’s kills and gore are pretty meh and uninteresting as well and the acting is a pretty decidedly mixed bag as well with some of the kid actors being better than others and the adult actors feel pretty “central casting,” and the “corn deity” looks kind of lame. So, what’s there to defend about it… well, I do think that the basic filmmaking is relatively competent and while I’m not going to tell you the film’s format is wildly original its “Lord of the Flies” formula is at least not something I’ve already seen in a million other horror movies (more like a dozen other horror movies). It marginally exceeded my very low expectations, put that on the poster. ** out of Five

Lawnmower Man is fun in how much of a bad idea it is. I feel sorry you accidentally watched the directors cut, Dracula. Amplifies all the uninteresting bits.
Wouldn't say any of the CotK movies are good, only 1 and 2 are watchable. 2 is silly in a fun way.

Day Thirty: Young FrankensteinI wish I found this movie funny. Young Frankenstein looks amazing. It does a wonderful job capturing the aesthetic of the Universal Monster movies and it's clear Mel Brooks put a lot of effort into capturing the feel of those classic horror movies. The cast is also filled not just with comedians, but incredibly skilled actors who can create consistent characters while still telling jokes. But, god forgive me, I just don't find the jokes very funny. I got a couple chuckles here and there, especially from Madeline Kahn and Cloris Leachman, but so many of the jokes just land with a hollow thud. The movie is so well-made and thoughtful that it still proves watchable and decently entertaining but I can only get so far behind a comedy which doesn't make me laugh. As always though, I'm grateful for Madeline Kahn. She's just the best. C+

Film Thirty-One: Raw (2016) I was intrigued by Julia Ducournau’s Raw when I saw it back in 2017 but I’m not sure it’s something I would have been in much of a hurry to revisit had Ducournau not made good on the promise she showed here on her follow-up film Titane. Between that and the recent success of her fellow French lady body horror compatriot Coralie Fargeat the time seemed right to revisit this and having done so I find that this movie did a lot more for me this time around. The film is meant to be this rather exaggerated surreal nightmare logic metaphor for the experience of a young person finding themselves at university in their freshman year and suddenly being surrounded by wildness and temptations and how the people who weren’t ready for that hit a sort of sensory overload as a result. The movie tells this through a story about a veterinary student who was raised as a vegetarian but gets her first taste of meat at school which seems to spark a taste for human flesh in her which escalates quickly. It’s very much not a movie that you’re supposed to take entirely literally but if you’re willing to go along with the vibe it really cooks. Garance Marillier is pretty effective in that lead role and the film is effective both at making this veterinarian school seem like an odd hedonistic fever dream and also delivering on some genuinely uncomfortable body horror once the time comes. It’s just a very creative take on this genre, not completely unprecedented necessarily but not following a common formula either. I still think Titane is the movie where Ducournau really reached her full potential but this is quite the precursor. **** out of Five

Day Thirty-One: You Can't Spell Horror without Two O's
Orca (1977)
So, like I imagine most people who've seen this, my expectations when sitting down to watch Orca weren't very high. Something about a Jaws ripoff a killer whale just inherently seemed silly. Well, credit where credit's due, Orca treats its core premise with just the right amount of seriousness to make it work. Don't get me wrong, it still very much knows it's a B-movie at the end of the day, but sort of like Robert Forster in Alligator, the presence of Richard Harris here helps elevate the material just enough. It's not so much that Harris is playing the most deeply-written or complex character, but the movie does give him what feels like meaty material in regards to the character contending with a sense of grief and regret, and how it's tied into the main hook of there being a killer whale that he has to take on. Because Richard Harris knows just how to play this, it in turn makes the overall movie that much better. Not that this even approaches the level of Jaws, but Orca can get decently exciting and thrilling in certain parts, which is a lot more than I was expecting, to be honest. As far as movies clearly made to mainly capitalize on a more popular and better movie of similar design that came before it, Orca feels like one of the better ones.
***/***
Bonus Film: Oddity (2024)
There seem to be at least a couple of movies every year that come out of nowhere and ignite some enthusiastic discussion among those who've seen then, and Oddity is one such movie this year. The premise is what hooked me here: the blind twin sister of a murdered woman comes out to the refurbished house/site of the murder, armed with a few curios/supernatural objects from the shop she owns with the intention of getting revenge on those who were possibly responsible for her sister's death. The film comes from a writer/director named Damien Mc Carthy, whom I'd never heard of before this, but I'll be keeping an eye out for him now, because Oddity certainly is dripping with atmosphere and tension. And it's present right from the opening sequence, which presents an inherently terrifying scenario, and the film is able to easily build from there. This is very much a slow burn, but the burn is steady and simmers nicely throughout the majority of the running time. And by the time it's firmly in its second half, there's some legitimately good stuff on display that allows the movie to make the most out of its more minimalist quality. Not to mention the use of a creepy-looking mannequin-like figure and how McCarthy gets some goosebump-worthy moments just by the simple act of it moving between shots. Also, hats off to Mc Carthy for getting a couple of genuinely effective jump scares by not telegraphing them beforehand. Generally, Oddity is an effective showcase of talent for Damien Mc Carthy, who's certainly got it and I'll be interested to see his other work, but it's also a fairly compelling and interesting story in and of itself. This may not be a new masterpiece of horror or anything, but it is very much a fairly gripping little horror film that's a fun exercise in tone and tension.

One of the best horror comedies. A showcase of brilliant callbacks. Lots of great gags.

Oct 31 The Exorcist 1973
I know its boring and cliche to have the Exorcist as your favourite horror movie, but no one has accused me of being exciting and non-cliche. This film is paced just right to let us grow and care for the characters and bringing us deeper into Chris and Regan's nightmare situation. Its so well-written, directed, acted... you know, all those things that make a movie. Its great at all of them. And that final moment between Regan and Father Dyer really got to me this time.
10/10
Thanks for another year in the thread, team.
