Leaving my nominations as The Conformist, The Marriage of Maria Braun, Walkabout
My case for these movies:
The Conformist- A major template for the paranoid political thrillers we'd see through the rest of the decade and an important transitional film for Bernardo Bertolucci. It's one of the best shot films of its type which launched Vittorio Storaro as one of the great DPs of all time and the film was also an acknowledged influence on Coppola as he made his big movies of the decade.
Walkabout- With all due respect to Don't Look Now this is definitely the better Nicholas Roeg movie of the decade. Despite being directed by a Brit it's considered a key movie of the Australian New Wave. The film's take on "civilization versus nature" is deeply layered and has held up quite well over time as has its multifaceted view of interactions between white people and indigenous populations.
The Marriage of Maria Braun- I get that this is a little less famous than some of the other nominated films' but it's Rainer Werner Fassbinder's best and most accessible movie from where I sit, it tells a fascinating story about life in post-war West Germany and is a perfect example of the New German Cinema movement.
I agree all three of these should be on there. The Conformist is a no doubter. I'm throwing my weight behind it this round. |
