I'll confess that I did not rewatch the first Dune in preparation for the second part. I watched it once, upon release, and already forgot everything about it. But I am familiar with the David Lynch version of Dune, so I get the gist of it. Desert planet. Spices. Sandworms. Fat dude floating around. Sting in his underwear. I get it. This one picks up with Timothée Chalamet training in the desert with Zendaya and Javier Bardem. A healthy portion of the beginning of the movie is just this. You know, a 1980's style montage wouldn't hurt. This is a 2hr 45min movie. It could have been tightened up a bit. But then we get to Austin Butler as the Sting character and that's when the movie picks up. From his introduction to the end of the movie, Dune Part Two is awesome. Denis Villeneuve may have finally surpassed Christopher Nolan. Congratulations you French-Canadian bastard. The set pieces are great. The music is awesome. I enjoyed all the politics and family drama. Bring on Dune Part Three.

I would’ve said Dune 1 is all setup but there’s still a ton of exposition in Dune 2. I think Dune 2 just leaned more into the metaphors. At times it felt like Matrix in the Desert. Javier Bardem might as well been doing a Laurence Fishbourne impersonation.

On my way to the theater now.
Dune day, baby. Or, as I like to call it D-Day.

Question: How long was this supposed to be set over? By the end of the movie Rebecca Ferguson is still pregnant with Oscar Isaac's baby but this all seems to have happened over way more than nine months. Was this pregnancy extended by the magic worm juice or something?

In the book, the same events took place over several years.

I enjoyed the movie, but I'm a bit concerned about the ending. The final minutes of the film are a significant departure from the novel. In the book, Paul and Chani had already discussed the fact that Paul would have to marry Princess Irulan. She wasn't upset about it at all, because Paul made it very clear that it would be a purely political marriage. Irulan would never warm his bed, and any heirs would be born by Chani. The Great Houses didn't refuse to recognize Paul's ascendancy to the Emperor's throne, either.

This all taking place within the pregnancy is a little odd.

I'm pretty lucky in that I've managed to get great adaptations for most of my all-time favourite books:" first Lord of the Rings, then Game of Thrones, and now Dune. Villenue finishes off the story in spectacular fashion, feeling very much of a piece with the first film, while also feeling fresh and different in the story its telling. Its a a monumental achievement in epic movie-making in an age where we are losing that to corporate risk-aversion. Once again this movie is visually stunning. The fabric of the film is as aesthetically rich as the first one, with some new flourishes as well. Some that particularity grabbed me were the Harkonnen fireworks and the way the Geidi Prime sun de-saturates colour in the outdoors. There are also some spectacular set pieces here. The first attack on the spice harvester and Paul's first worm ride were both very thrilling. And the attack on Arakeen actually set off an alert on my friend's fitbit beside me telling him to calm down. The casting once again is spectacular. The new additions of Walken, Pugh and Butler add to the incredible cast. I loved having more of Chani and Stilgar, while Chamelet really steps it up a couple of notches as Paul, truly taking the lead of the film.
My only quibble is kind of a nerd-who-read-the-book nitpick, but I was really hoping to see what they did with Alia, but instead they made the choice for her to not even be born yet. This does kind of make for a weird timeline as things seem to only be taking place within months when it seems like it should be longer than that. I also sort of felt like the pacing may have been a little too quick at the start, but not that big a deal. This is a grand achievement in sci-fi film-making, especially taking the two films together. Will there be a third? Only time will tell. At this point I will certainly take it if they make it, and if they don't these two together still make a spectacular epic story brought to life. 9.5/10

One other thing I don't really get, why do sandworms seem to spend 90% of their time underground in most circumstances, but then suddenly start slithering across the surface when people start riding them? And are the people somehow able to steer them with those ropes? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Maybe it would suffocate unless those are covered up by its skin?

The new additions of Walken, Pugh and Butler add to the incredible cast. That was Javier Bardem, not Gerard Butler.

Definitely an improvement over Part One for me, but I still can't say I love this franchise.
