After realizing that Godzilla: Minus One is still not out on home video or streaming, I decided to look into it. In Japan, it's out on bluray on May 1st. In the west, there is no release date yet. Apparently, this is due to the licensing agreement that Toho made with Legendary. There's some sort of non-compete clause on it, and with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire being released soon, it's resulted in a delay for Toho's film being available.

I've heard that as well, but I wonder if they may use the Oscar win as a promotion for when the new one comes out.. If not I guess we wait.

Japanese companies tend to be way slower about rolling out home video releases. They aren't scared shitless of piracy like western studios are and they tend to stick to their guns about release windows and the like and greatly prioritize their domestic market and serve that first.

Yeah, because Makoto Shinkai's Suzume (which I very much want to see), just came out on Blu Ray here this week in spite of releasing in theaters last year.

This is all a half-truth. Legendary and Toho do have noncompete clauses in their contracts, though it mostly just limited Godzilla films being in theaters at the same time. There is a possibility that it might have put a crutch on home media release, but the honest to god truth is that there was nothing unusual about Minus One's home media release. People were just freaking out because it wasn't the short window that American studio films get. Japan's home media releases happen much slower, and importing them to America usually happens after they've already made their own home soil release, usually to make sure Japanese consumers buy their own products. Minus One's American streaming/disc date was always going to follow that, no matter what the window was for other releases or when The New Empire came out. I do think it was possible they delayed it until after The New Empire's streaming debut per their contract, but even if they didn't, the wait would have only been a few weeks sooner. All of this is without mentioning distribution deals. Toho released Minus One to cinemas by themselves in what was supposed to be a limited release. The popularity of the film took them by surprise, because it was supposed to be pulled after a week. While I believe the streaming release could be handled by Toho themselves, for a disc release they'd likely need a distributor, because they aren't exactly set up for physical media over here. Shin Godzilla took a full year to release on streaming and blu-ray. The two reasons I saw Minus One four times in theaters was because A) I am a format whore and B) I knew it wasn't going to be available to watch at home for a good long while. Anyway, take three guesses as to what I'm watching right now.

Finally caught it now that it's on Netflix. Really cool, much more dramatic than I thought it would be.
I know very little about Godzilla movies but I did see the easter egg that the filmmakers threw in. The climax of this movie takes place in Tokyo. The climax of the first 1954 film also takes place in Tokyo. A nice little gem that only the true Godzilla fans might pick up.
