Well, I’ll be damned. The unnecessary sequel to a 35 year old gay movie turned out to be amazing. Yes, SnoBorderZero. A-may-zing. It hit all the right emotional beats. It had a plot that gave the movie real stakes and thrilling action scenes. We got a winner here. Never bet against Tom Cruise. And to think Dracula was talking mad shit about Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning. Bite your tongue, sir.

I have only seen half of Top Gun, that was four months ago maybe, and I remember nothing about it.

I have only seen half of Top Gun, that was four months ago maybe, and I remember nothing about it. Top Gun is famous for its awesome soundtrack and hilariously bad homosexual subtext. Think Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2. If you asked people the plot of Top Gun, most wouldn’t remember either. But the sequel has a legitimately good screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie. I was impressed. Top Gun 2 is a real movie. Top Gun 1 is a farce.

I also hadn't watched Top Gun until I was in my mid-20s and it was more out of obligation at that point. My desire to see this is 1/10 but I keep hearing good things and I have a big chunk of time wide open early next week. I may just hit that. Or The Northman. Or Everything Everywhere All At Once. Haven't decided yet.

Doomsday needs to see Everything Everywhere because my gut says he'll absolutely hate it. The Northman is probably the most Doomsday movie of the year so far.

I was not expecting it to be this popular. It's nearly sold out throughout the weekend here.

I think the projections saying that this is going to make 100 million this weekend are also proving that everyone saying "Avatar 2 is going to bomb" is full of shit.
Don't underestimate boomers coming out full force to watch a sequel to something they love. It doesn't matter if it took decades to get it.

Yeah, I feel pretty much the same way upon my initial impressions.

One of the better big budget pics to come out this year, namely due to some impressive aerial sequences. Story was pretty much what I expected, better or worse, but Cruise and his team continue to bring enough visual flair to leave me satisfied.

Give me examples of cringy geek movies that rely on nostalgia. Spider-Man: No Way Home is literally the biggest post-pandemic movie. Or do you mean the geek equivalent of Creed and Top Gun? Which movies would that even be? Force Awakens? The biggest movie of 2015? Jurassic World? The 2nd biggest movie of 2015? Mad Max: Fury Road? The most acclaimed movie of 2015?

Ghostbusters Afterlife came to mind, though I haven't actually seen it. I'm talking about critical opinion, not public acclaim.

Ghostbusters Afterlife came to mind, though I haven't actually seen it. I wouldn’t count Ghostbusters: Afterlife cause the OG cast only did cameos (one being a CGI recreation). In Creed and Maverick, Stallone and Cruise are lead actors and further the stories of their characters. Force Awaken would likely be the closest comparison… and you can see why the jocks would win this round.

Ten years ago I got into a week long debate with Ewok Droppings on why Joseph Kosinski would be my choice to direct the then untitled upcoming 7th Star Wars film. At the time he had only directed Tron: Legacy, which, while not a huge commercial success, still proved that he was capable of taking a beloved decades old IP and continuing it's story while respecting the original. I rest my case.

Television is probably a better medium for Favreau than film, I think the right people took the right projects, at least when it comes to the first installments.
