What an odd choice. Aside from the car chase Bullitt isn't that good of a movie and there's really nothing unique about the character which makes the comment that 'it's not a remake and is an original story centered around Frank Bullitt' that much more perplexing. Then there's the matter of casting someone who's not Steve McQueen as Bullitt...

Yeah... Bullitt is a pretty standard "cop who plays by his own rules" stuff and to the best of my knowledge, it's not based on a series of novels or anything. I'm not sure why they would need to buy the IP to do something similar. I think Spielberg is just trying to redo every movie he liked when he was fifteen at this point. Like one day on the set of Ready Player One he thought to himself, if these punk-ass gen Xers and millennials get to relive their childhoods, so can I.

Spielberg spoke at the Fabelmans screening I went to in November. He said he 'absolutely, positively' doesn't know what his next project is going to be but whether or not it's some Bullitt spinoff thing I assume he has an idea if he's going around town with John Williams.
