Eh, Groundhog Day is good, not great. Good movie, certainly. I just am not part of the crowd that hails it as some comedy masterpiece. I can think of a ton of other movies in general that I would prefer to see on the list.

I can think of a ton of other movies in general that I would prefer to see on the list. But how many movies owe a debt to it? There have been so many other "time loop" movies since Groundhog Day and while it didn't invent the term per se it is certainly the reference point people go to for every Edge of Tomorrow and Happy Death Day since then. And they go back to it because it executed on its concept particularly well, giving its protagonist a gradual arc of improvement within his situation that doesn't take the easy way out. |

I've been pushing for Groundhog Day from the jump and haven't had much support. The reasons you mentioned are what makes it a true classic. It can seem disarmingly simple while viewing it, but that's sort of the point. I mean, nothing can kill a movie faster than repetition and Groundhog Day lives by it yet is wholly successful. That's an extremely difficult job to pull off and one that none of its imitators, even the best of the bunch in Edge of Tomorrow, does as well as Groundhog Day.
