PG Cooper bringing up The Book of Henry brought back to mind a different movie.
Not sure if this qualifies as a hot take, but: The Snowman, starring Michael Fassbender, is worth seeing once.
Just to see how very, very wrong a movie that should've at the very least been solid can go. This is another fascinatingly bad movie where the flaws are all oh so obvious and clear as day, but like a nine-car pile-up, you can't look away from. And I admit, whenever I've come across it on HBO or whatever, I've thrown it on for a little bit. It was just on one of the FX channels this past weekend and I caught some of it again.
Not calling it good by any means, but it has this strange allure in its awfulness.

I remember being vaguely interested in The Snowman when the trailers came out. Then reviews called it a train wreck and then I knew I had to watch it. Still haven't gotten around to it though. I really need to.

SnoBorderZero’s favorite basketball movie Hoosiers is hilariously bad. It’s a good movie with basketball but it’s a dumb movie about basketball. If that makes any sense. Let me put it this way: Teen Wolf is a good werewolf movie but it’s a bad basketball movie. Hoosiers is about white kids in 1952 that play basketball like 1980’s college students. Then in the championship game they play against a team with black kids — and win. In 1952. Get the fuck outta here. Larry Bird and the Celtics win three championships and Hollywood gets cocky.

My favorite basketball movie is Hoop Dreams, and in terms of movie-movies about basketball I don't know if there's any that are actually good. Hoosiers is overrated as fuck. It's charming and simple enough to coast on breeziness, but it's also checks off every single sports movie cliche in the book. It not only has the rebel kid that's the star they need, it also has the alcoholic coach that they need and who needs the team for redemption. Seriously, I don't think Hoosiers misses a single sports cliche beat. It's probably why sports fans, who are generally notoriously awful in their movie opinions hence why so many of them think Space Jam isn't complete shit (which it is), love it so much. |
