As someone who has next to no interest in Harry Potter, has never read any of the books and has only watched each film once, I thought Goblet of Fire was the best while most of the others were formulaic and eventually became predictable and silly. Any and all 'but in the books!' arguments mean nothing to me. Goblet of Fire took a good step in a different direction and felt fresh and exciting. Even the later movies seemed to float back into a rut before too long.

Unfortunately it's just gotten worse for me after several subsequent viewings, as a result of my wife and sisters loving the series.

I disagree. The movies still need to work as stand-alone movies and have a consistency within them. We shouldn't need to read additional texts to be able to coherently follow a given film. I didn't say the movies only worked for book readers. I said that they (wisely so) started to condense and structure the overall stories of each in ways that would allow non-readers to follow along well, but where book readers would be able to understand the finer points and details. But of course, none of your problems are problems for me. Come on. Come ooooooon. I've never heard from a single person that wasn't bummed that the one and only professional quidditch match we were supposed to see was completely left out. When the movie first came out, sure, I was a little bummed. But in retrospect, I get it. And in fact, I'd argue it's kind of a necessary cut. Cause, really, what importance is the Quidditch World Cup to the overall plot? It's an entertaining diversion, but nothing more. The only real purpose it serves is to introduce us to Viktor Krum -- and the movie includes at least that, and that's really all you need there. Otherwise, you're talking about another big expensive set piece for a seven-to-ten minute sequence that would really just eat up more budget and screentime before getting to the meat of the story. If I were adapting the screenplay, I'd cut it, too. The movie didn't need it.

"Hold the Line" is an objectively superior Toto song than "Africa"

Batman Forever is on TBS It reminded me I haven't shared my Hot Take for the holiday season. So this month marks the 25th anniversary of Dumb & Dumber. I rewatched it recently, and I gotta say, I think Ace Ventura aged a lot better than Dumb & Dumber. I'll let Doomsday/ SnoBorderZero soak that in for a moment. Alright. Dumb & Dumber is still a classic. Don't get me wrong. But it's basically two or three movies wrapped into one. Ace Ventura is a lot more cohesive... and it's a lot more interesting too... and does more too with its weird concept.

Dumb and Dumber was the funniest movie of all time for a good many years, but I tried to rewatch it recently too and it wasn't living up to the expectations I had in my mind. I cut the viewing short so that the rest of it may live on in ignorant bliss in my memory.

Not sure that "aged well" is the best way to describe a movie that ends on a note of mass transphobia. Also Dumb and Dumber is way better in general and always was.

It's occurred to me that I've never really talked about the Harry Potter movies very much on the forums. I believe most of them have always been very mixed bags for me. It's an odd series. I think I love the ideas and the settings more than the actual stories. I was kind of hoping that involving adults in the universe (ala Fantastic Beasts) would have helped, but thus far, not so much. I've been re-watching them slowly, and there are a lot of problems with a lot of the movies. I am really questioning how good they actually are, as I once thought.

Liar, Liar is very good and as for The Mask, PGCooper is clearly unwell in the head. But he's still young so he can be forgiven.

I actually rewatched both Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber last year. Dumb and Dumber holds up the best, i still laugh at a lot of the jokes. Ace has its moments but it’s a pretty weird movie, it always was. I think I was one of the few 90s kids who wasn’t all that into it and it was hard to watch in 2018.
That said, When Nature Calls is much better than the Dumb and Dumber sequels and the rhino scene is funnier than anything in the first Ace Ventura.
