Some time ago, thebtskink and I discussed movies that were TV mainstays in the 90's. The Woman in Red is definitely one of them. It's not quite as iconic as Kelly Le Brock's other film, Weird Science, but it's definitely close. That Marilyn Monroe homage is just... classic. Anyway, the movie holds up incredibly well. Gene Wilder, God bless his soul, was a comic genius even late into his career. He made a funny mid-life crisis film that's millennial friendly. Recently, I watched that Robert Downey Jr movie, The Pick Up Artist. It's aged horribly. All copies of it should be set on fire to preserve the image of Tony Stark/Iron Man. Downey plays an obnoxious horny guy whose actions are rewarded with a barely legal Molly Ringwald. In the Gene Wilder film, the punchline is that he's tempted to cheat on his wife with Kelly LeBrock, but in actuality, he fails miserably while almost everyone around him, including his own wife, are successfully having affairs. It's silly... but it's funny and even young people today can laugh at it. |

I downright hated A Christmas Story. I like Donnie Darko okay. Love everything else.
Gotta say, much as I love James Rolfe, these recent videos haven't really been doing it for me. He doesn't put nearly as much effort into editing as before (which I get since these are basically filler in between his bigger projects) and while I do like hearing his thoughts, he doesn't put much analysis into his stuff.
I will give him credit though for actually picking movies that are universally loved for the most part. All too often I see lists like this were half the movies are pretty divisive already.

The dude is 100% famous for making videos about shitty old video games. He was really good at that, but the joke kind of ran its course (there are only so many ways to express frustration at poor platforming mechanics). His videos about movies are basically side projects and I don't think he really considers himself much of a film theorist and if they were his bread and butter I don't think he'd be very famous. |

None of those films are movies that haven't already been discussed to death in one form or another. Titanic got lots of backlash. Same for Sixth Sense. I hold the Guinness Book record for the most online Dark Knight criticisms in history. Even Citizen Kane has been on the receiving end of some 'overrated' articles and comments especially after AFI ranked it at #1. He didn't really add a whole lot.

Airplane is one of those movies whose praise I just never understood. I get it, I understand it's silly and 'don't call me Shirley' and 'do you like gladiator movies?' and all that stuff. It's just not as funny as its reputation suggests. Even as a kid I knew Naked Gun was a way funnier movie.
