The Naked Gun has its place in comedy history but it's easy to take it for granted. That's where the sequels come in. I enjoy the sequels. Heck, I enjoy almost anything with Leslie Nielsen. But there is clearly a major decline in quality between the sequels and the original. Not just in jokes and gags but in execution. The original flawlessly blends wacky humor and serious story. People don't watch these movies for the story but the actors playing it straight is what makes the jokes and gags funnier - or funny. Even when the actors loosen up and goof around, like when Leslie Nielsen is umpiring the baseball game, the story justifies it. I guess what I'm saying is that the movie has an established universe that makes everything believable and easier to laugh at the absurdity. The sequels are as guilty as the imitators. Gags for the sake of gags and nothing to hold them together. Only reason it works is because the talent is there to pull it off.

No, you're thinking of Tom Green.

Can someone explain why Close Encounters is so great? Because I sure as hell can't.

Close Encounters is awesome. Great fusion of Spielberg's genre interest with a more adult story. The exploration of obsession is compelling, Richard Dreyfuss is well-used, the score is amazing, there are some excellent shots, and the climax is amazing.

You do know this is the man who made Jaws, three Indiana Jones movies, E.T., Schindler's List, etc. I don't know if Close Encounters is even Top 10. Duel is a better movie.

My Top 5 Spielberg's might look something like:
1. Saving Private Ryan 2. Raiders of the Lost Ark 3. Hook (yes) 4. Jaws 5. Close Encounters

Call me Crazy but I love everything about Watchmen by the Synder. It was the best adaption of a comic series I had ever seen, and to this day still holds up even more.

While I don't love everything about it, Watchmen is a quality adaptation of a very difficult story to bring to the big screen. I would argue that Sin City is the best adaptation of a comic series, though.

It's weird, on one hand I think that's the best adaptation of Watchmen we possibly could have hoped for, on the other hand I still don't like it. I think that book is just unadaptable.

I think the ending of the film is much better executed than it would have been as a straight adaptation. A giant space squid would have been stupid in that movie

The only thing I really didn't like about the film adaption was Nite Owl and Silk Spectre. Namely, their relationship, their back-alley fight scene, and the overly long, awkward love scene. Otherwise I found it pretty much a live-action telling of the comic, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Especially the ultimate cut. I suppose if I could have changed one other thing, it would have been Dr Manhattan's voice. Anything additional would have been better, imo, than just the actor's plain ol voice.

Call me crazy but try as I might, I'm just not in love with Alien. Aliens is amazing, I'm watching it in theaters this weekend. Alien is fine, it's just...not my favorite movie.

Time out. I didn't say it was bad, I'm just not in love with it. I appreciate it, I enjoy it, I've seen it several times, there are many things I really like about it, it's just not the movie I'd take with me on vacation.
