Twentieth Century Fox has, according to Deadline, officially given the green light to the long-awaited Independence Day 2, putting the film on track for its previously announced June 24, 2016 release. That means that the alien invasion sequel will hit the big screen almost exactly 20 years after the original. The studio is eyeing a May production start and will now move to close the directing deal with Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, White House Down). As was previously reported, Will Smith is not coming back for the sequel. Additional casting is planned to begin as soon as Emmerich’s deal is officially signed. Right now, the studio has only given the green light to a single film. Previous updates have suggested that the studio would make two franchise sequels and film them back-to-back. Apparently, those planned have changed and any potential third film will be largely dependent on the second film’s success. The outlet also reports that Carter Blanchard, best known for the short-lived 2009 series “G vs E,” rewrote the first draft of the script that was done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then James Vanderbilt. Emmerich is also set to produced with Devlin and Harald Kloser. The original Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide. As always, check back for updates on the sequel as they become available. www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/387131-independence-day-sequel-gets-the-green-light-from-20th-century-fox

With the much anticipated sequel having received the green light in November, casting is now underway on director Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day 2. TheWrap today reports that Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, The Expendables 2) has been offered a leading role. Set to hit theaters June 24, 2016 (almost exactly 20 years after the original), Independence Day 2 is looking to begin production in May with a script most recently rewritten by Carter Blanchard (best known for the short-lived 2009 series “G vs E”). Previous drafts were done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then by James Vanderbilt. Although Will Smith will not be returning, both Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are expected to reprise their roles as David Levinson and President Thomas J. Whitmore, respectively. Hemsworth can next be seen in Kieran Darcy-Smith’s By Way of Helena, re-teaming with Hunger Games franchise co-star Woody Harrelson. He’ll follow that with a role opposite Kate Winsley and Sarah Snook in Jocelyn Moorhouse’s The Dressmaker before returning to Panem for one last time in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, hitting theaters on November 20. The original Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide. Emmerich is also set to produce the sequel alongside Devlin and Harald Kloser. www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/403781-independence-day-2-targets-liam-hemsworth

Deadline brings word that character actor William Fichtner (The Lone Ranger, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) has joined the cast of Independence Day 2 as top general, an upgrade from his “Colonel” position in Armageddon. The outlet also notes that Fichtner will have a larger presence in two planned follow-up films to the 2016 release. It had been previously reported that the follow-up to the 1996 film was being conceived of as a two-part sequel, but now it appears that a fourth film could also be in the cards. Check back here as we learn more. Again directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day 2 will also see the return of stars Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner as well as a cast of franchise newcomers that includes Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Travis Tope, Joey King, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. Set to hit theaters June 24, 2016 (almost exactly 20 years after the original), Independence Day 2 features a script by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin and James Vanderbilt, James A.Woods & Nicolas Wright. The original Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide. Emmerich is also set to produce the sequel alongside Devlin and Harald Kloser. www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/445131-william-fichtner-joins-independence-day-2-two-more-films-being-planned

Now that Will Smith's star is dimming let's see if he sits out for the other sequels.

Still think this is a stupid idea, but I do like the idea of showing what it would have required to rebuild society after the "War of 1996." I almost kind of wish we could get an entire film of that without bothering with another invasion.

It looks like the humans are appropriating some of the technology from the first invasion. I really like that.

Im ok with no Will Smith because he has flops now and we need good sequels and jeff and pullman is enough. Its likely about there children finishing the fight anyways.

Twenty years later and they haven't missed a beat. "Yes, that's right, apparently spaceships crashing into cities is "in" right now!"
