So Ridley Scott just ended the age-old debate of whether or not Deckard is a Replicant by blatantly stating that he is. comicbook.com/2015/09/29/blade-runner-sequel-will-explain-how-deckard-is-a-replicant/Sci-fi film classic Blade Runner released 27 years ago, and ended on a wonderfully ambiguous note. Director Ridley Scott has since thrown such ambiguity to the wind, confirmed that Rick Deckard was definitely a replicant. But something doesn’t add up. Replicants were supposed to have a built in lifespan of 4 years, but Harrison Ford is reprising his role as Deckard the in the upcoming sequel. So…how does that work? “I’m not going to tell you,” Scott replied to Yahoo when asked. “You’ll have to see the story. It’ll all make sense.” Deckard will return in the next Blade Runner, before passing the torch over to a new lead character, played by Ryan Gosling. The film will definitely need to explain how a replicant like Deckard has survived so long, considering the timing that Scott has in mind. “It was 2017, so coming back it’ll be 2047, roughly,” he says. “As young as you can play Ryan Gosling. He’s 34, but he looks 27 when he’s doing his push-ups. So maybe 2050.” Blade Runner 2 is expected to begin production in 2016. Well, Ridley Scott has always stated Deckard is a Replicant, but Phillip K. Dick, Harrison Ford, and Hampton Fancher (screewriter) have always scoffed at that notion. It's always been a fun debate (and boy does it get testy over at IMDB) and some of the theories people have floated out there are interesting. It seems kind of cheap for Scott to just put something into the second film that Deckard was some advanced model all along, but if they make it work then so be it. But doesn't sound like Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott are gonna be reconciling anytime soon.

No, he ended that debate about a decade ago when he said he was a replicant.

Yeah, but we always knew that's what Scott himself intended but Ford and Co. rejected that idea and the debate among fans never stopped. Scott's Directors and Final cuts certainly pointed to that idea based on the unicorn sequences, but the debate sparked up again when Ford was in the sequel because, since Replicant life-spans are 4 years, how could Deckard be alive 30+ years into the future? Now Scott is confirming he's a Replicant with actual plot points, not just interpretations, and so it'll be interesting to see how they explain it and basically what the hell Deckard has been doing all this time.

Well, of course Ford denies it, he doesn't want his character to lose that air of mystery.

True. In a way I wish Ridley Scott didn't say anything and allowed the speculation to continue. Even if we already knew Ford would return it could've been an interesting reveal that he's a Replicant, especially since we would've assumed he wasn't if he was still living in the year 2047. Now I wonder how long before the events in Blade Runner that he'd been "alive". Maybe he had never actually done any work before at all and these were artificial memories, similar to what Dr. Tyrell implants into Rachael. Fans point out that Gaff (the weird police officer that Deckard first meets at the noodle bar in the beginning) seems to be watching him throughout, and at the end after Roy dies he suddenly appears, so it may have been a test to see if Deckard was a superior Replicant model to the Nexus 6 of Roy Batty.

I know we're usually dismissive of this kind of thing (sequels to ancient classics and reboots) round these parts but I've got a good feeling about this.
I have this hunch that it's gonna be atmospheric as fuck, and I personally feel Gosling can do no wrong.
I read on another forum some guy can't stand Gosling regardless of his role. I mean, what the fuck? That's just bizarre.
I can't think of many actors in his age bracket that have the charisma and command your attention the way he does.
I personally look forward to hearing about his next project(s).
Disliking "everything he does"?

I agree with you. Normally I'd be skeptical and worried as hell about them making a sequel to Blade Runner, but it's all in the personnel. Deakins as the DP? One can only attempt to dream of the astounding visual style he's bringing to the film. He's already stated that he's not going to just try to mimic the look of the original, and while he's staying true to the overall vision, Blade Runner 2 will have its own unique aesthetic, which is awesome. And I'm with you, I think Gosling is an excellent choice. His role in Drive sells me on this. People forget that Harrison Ford in Blade Runner was not Han Solo or Indiana Jones. He doesn't have a lot of lines or even much charisma when he does, but that totally worked for this bleak setting. I think Gosling will do just fine.

Harrison Ford in Blade Runner was not Han Solo or Indiana Jones. He was just bored and cashing a pay check. So... he was like modern day Indiana Jones and Han Solo.

Well he hated Ridley Scott because Scott never included him on any development or consulted him on how he wanted to play the character. But to be honest I thought his sulky demeanor fit the film's dreary environment perfectly.

It'll do well, granted the film is actually good and they market it well. Blade Runner may have flopped in 1982, but it's very well known and Ford and Gosling will rope in old fans and newcomers alike. Can't wait to see some stills of the sets.

Hopefully it's another Fantastic Four that no one will see. It's mostly likely The X-Force, which ties into the Deadpool storyline.
