I think this is the first time Asylum has done a mockbuster of a Godzilla movie. They did King of the Lost World for King Kong 2005, and I don't remember one for Skull Island but maybe they did, but yeah. Will purchase.

Finally got around to seeing this... Yea the humans are terrible but damn some of them brawls were so sick.
Giving it a 8/10 on the monster verse scale... Prob a 6.5/10 on the sliding genre scale. After the first ten minutes I thought I'd really fucking hate it but it won me over pretty quickly.
The cgi was noticeably weak at a lot of points, woulda thought the covid delay would have helped some post production but maybe they just left it untouched.

Oh boy, I wish Hollywood would just take a little bit more care and attention to their blockbusters, because somethinking like Godzilla vs Kong has a lot of potential, but has a lot of garbage in it which needs to be purged.
For example, there is a subplot in this newest monster movie venture where the kid from the last Godzilla movie, and her friend Ricky Baker, follows a conspiracy podcaster around to find out the secrets behind a malicious tech company. This entire thing should have been cut. It was pointless and added practically nothing to the overall story. It felt like something from a Transformers movie (though I suppose that makes sense). It really drags the film down. There are other ways to reveal the company's pernicious intent.
Often the human stories in these movies are particularly pointless, but I didn't mind following Rebecca Hall and the girl who communicates with Kong. But really its the monsters who are the stars. And in this film, they clearly make the choice to follow Kong as the main protagonist. It was a good decision as he is somehow able to evoke sympathy and stay at the core of the story.
There are only a couple of showdowns between the titular creatures, but they are both really great. Of course, the plot goes where we all know its going to go: they will eventually have to team up against a greater threat. But I do like that, even though the movie goes down this obvious path, they still give us a very clear answer of who wins the Godzilla vs Kong match. And the final showdown and monster design at the climax is awesome, so its all good.
So in short, I liked it. Its got lots of crap that could be cut, but there's lots that worked for me, particularly Godzilla and Kong themselves.
7/10
