I'm actually stunned Joker is as low as it is. Good work, everybody! That’s how we know it’s rigged. Not in my favor. A History of Violence was 13th in my list.

It was 83rd on my list. Really good movie...but not as good as the 82 others I had over it, for me personally.

That movie bugged the shit outta me when it came out and I haven't revisited. Really don't like viggos accent.
It's prob not number 99 on the list but it was one I hadn't seen in a long time.

90. The New World
The story of the English exploration of Virginia, and of the changing world and loves of Pocahontas.
CS! Voice: Holy hell did I love this movie. This was Terrence Malick's first collaboration with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and the two are clearly a match made in heaven. The New World is one of Malick's most strikingly beautiful films. The film is shot primarily in the wilderness with natural lighting and the results are breathtaking. The free-form movement of the camera gives a great sense of life to the film's visuals. There's a great sense reality unfolding to The New World, and that too applies to the conflict between Indigenous peoples and settlers. Early scenes are not weighed down by the baggage of historical reality, but instead hold a sense of curiousity and urgency - a sense that such events are unfolding in real-time. Of course, violence does eventually emerge, and this is in fact one of the areas The New World most excels. Malick delivers some remarkably crafted skirmishes and you brings a sense of ugliness and hatred to the colonial abuses that is striking.
One thing I found surprising was just how clear and foregrounded the actual plot was. The New World is the film a lot of people point to as where Malick abandoned the pretenses of storytelling and just started shooting pretty pictures for the sake of it. I really don't see that at all. Maybe it's because Malick is working with a well-known historical myth, but I find the narrative here to be remarkably clear and really at the forefront of the film. Quite frankly I'd argue this is actually one of Malick's most plot driven films, although that's certainly relative. I'd also argue it's one of his best. The New World is certainly a beautifully shot movie with some amazing moments of visual poetry, but it's also an exciting piece of cinema that tells a highly compelling story with a great level of detail and insight. This ranks right up there with Days of Heaven as being among my favourite Malick films. - PG Cooper 89. Edge of Tomorrow
A soldier fighting aliens gets to relive the same day over and over again, the day restarting every time he dies.
CS! Voice: Edge of Tomorrow markets itself as an action/sci-fi/war/mystery suspense movie rolled into one. Usually movies that sound this muddled turn out to be duds however this blends all factors into one naturally. Tom Cruise is Will Cage, a Major who finds himself on the front lines of an alien war after being demoted. After getting some alien blood on him he finds himself in a time loop reliving the same day again and again, however each day brings a new opportunity to find a way to win the war. Unlike some, I enjoy Tom Cruise movies. They’re fun, exciting, and it’s tough for the guy to make a really bad film. Even in movies like Eyes Wide Shut which on paper seem to be out of his wheelhouse he delivers the goods. Even though his role in Edge of Tomorrow didn’t require the skills of a classically trained thespian he still made it his own. Granted, the movie does have some missteps and holes, like Major Cage stating how thousands of soldiers enlisted thanks to him yet nobody recognizes him once demoted and sent to training, but these don’t hamper the solid action that makes up much of the film. - Doomsday 88. Borat
Kazakh TV talking head Borat is dispatched to the United States to report on the greatest country in the world. With a documentary crew in tow, Borat becomes more interested in locating and marrying Pamela Anderson.
CS! Voice: Any way you cut it, this needs to be appreciated. First of all, this is completely different from any of the other mainstream comedies that were being put out when this was going on. How many other comedians were drawing in huge audiences to see performance art experiments into human behavior? I also love how this movie was completely willing to piss off and offend people, and not just through cheap gross out gags like most studio produced comedies.
Beneath all of that, this is some really smart satire both into American prejudices and into the limits of courtesy. Plus, it’s funny as fuck. - Dracula 87. Cloud Atlas
An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.
CS! Voice: I’m rather indifferent to the Wachowskis. I never worshipped at the altar of the Matrix and I thought the sequels were just bland, pretentious entertainment that had some fun scenes yet I’ve barely thought of them since I saw them in theaters. I was never really in one camp or the other. Cloud Atlas however demonstrates that they have a grasp on extravagant CGI as well as how to weave together characters and ideas. For some reason most movies either have one or the other nowadays.
Speaking of stories, the execution of the film obviously is where the line gets drawn between the pro-Cloud Atlas and anti-Cloud Atlas and I can see both perspectives. The stories weave together very well and the film maintains suspense among unrelated scenes seamlessly. Lesser filmmakers wouldn’t have even bothered to attempt to do it so well. However this film contains numerous stories spread over several hundred years which are related to each other in some vague and not-so-vague ways. I can easily see the argument where these separate plotlines aren’t as fleshed out, they’re shallow or leave you hanging. While a remedy to this would have been to make a 10-12 hour movie with each storyline getting its own film, many of the so-called ‘holes’ would really have no bearing on the movie or theme as a whole. At the end of the day, each of the characters was where they needed to be.
I can see how this movie could be divisive, however to me it was great to look at, I found myself involved and rarely bored, and it was refreshing seeing something so big that didn’t treat me like I was an idiot. This is a movie that I can easily watch again and get something new from it every time. - Doomsday 86. Hot Fuzz
A skilled London police officer is transferred to a small town with a dark secret.
CS! Voice: What can I say? This movie knows how to crack me up. Whether it be the dialogue, the characters, or Edgar Wright's great sense of visual comedy on timing. The most consistent of the Cornetto trilogy and on the whole a very fun watch. - PG Cooper 85. Big Fish
A frustrated son tries to determine the fact from fiction in his dying father's life.
CS! Voices: Every now and then a movie goes for an epic, emotional, funny, and thought-provoking ride and nails it on every level. I just wish Burton still made good movies. This was his swan song, as far as I'm concerned. - Jibbs Critics have often accused Tim Burton of ignoring storytelling in favor of strong visuals. To me, those critics miss the point. For Burton, the visuals tell the story. He's just that type of filmmaker. But with Big Fish, Burton throws those critics a bone by making a movie that's all about storytelling. And even then, critics still complained. I remember Roger Ebert saying, "what's the point of this movie?" The point, Mr. Ebert, is the power of storytelling. And also the imagination it takes to tell a good one. Even if the truth is hidden behind a lot of bull s--t. - Neverending 84. Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World
During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.
CS! Voice: This is an old fashioned film in many ways. It’s based on an old book with old values and it stars someone that has a kind of gravitas that is rare in a movie star today. The whole thing harkens back to the kind of epic that someone like Kirk Douglass would have starred in back in the 50s or 60s. That’s probably what makes it so noteworthy, this was a very high budgeted film that was made for an older demographic in an age where pretty much every large movie seems to be made for 13 year old boys. - Dracula 83. 25th Hour
Cornered by the DEA, convicted New York drug dealer Montgomery Brogan reevaluates his life in the 24 remaining hours before facing a seven-year jail term.
CS! Voice: 25th Hour’s biggest claim to fame is almost certainly the way that it documents what life was like in New York very shortly after the attacks of September 11th. The New York that the story plays out over is filled with melancholy, there are constant reminders of what has happened; like the yuppie apartment that sits right across from Ground Zero that sits like a scar in the middle of the city. All this was especially poignant because it was made really soon after the event, it was pretty much the first film to acknowledge what had happened, and that must have taken a lot of courage.
But even if this film wasn’t an important document of our times it still would have found a place on this list. The film shows the less sexy side of crime narratives. The main character is a drug dealer who’s been caught and sentenced to seven years in prison. What plays out is the final day in his life as a free man. There are some great actors here and it’s easily one of the best projects since He Got Game, and maybe even since Malcolm X. And it’s all capped off by a perfectly executed and deliciously ambiguous ending. - Dracula 82. Almost Famous
A high-school boy is given the chance to write a story for Rolling Stone Magazine about an up-and-coming rock band as he accompanies them on their concert tour.
CS! Voice: Definitely holds up. I think it's so great because Cameron Crowe is channeling his own experiences into the script, which thus gives the movie a certain genuineness that bleeds into everything. You can just sense the passion here, from the dialogue and characterization to the waxing poetic about music. It all comes together to make Almost Famous truly something special. - PhantomKnight 81. 1917
April 6th, 1917. As a regiment assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.
CS! Voice: 1917 is filled with these sort of interchanging moments and is very effective as a result. Mendes and Deakins are certainly adhering to a set guideline of rules here, and while doing so does limit the film in some areas, 1917 is a marvel because of them as well. It's never easy for a film to maintain a thrilling, suspenseful tone over its entirety, but 1917 is able to pull it off thanks to the enormous detail that Mendes has covered his sequences with and Deakins' impeccable imagery and dream-like camerawork. 1917 has to be a shoe-in to win the cinematography Oscar for this year and could even score some additional technical awards as well. 1917 isn't quite as successful as Dunkirk and it doesn't entirely reshape how to make a war film either despite its sterling technique, but it's among the best of 2019 and has a lot of qualities to admire and celebrate. - SnoBorderZero
