I saw the movie tonight, so allow me to offer a different perspective. No, this won't be a negative review. Simply, since I was never over-hyped for this film I can offer folks an opinion that isn't full of exaggerations.
Is this movie better than The Dark Knight? No. It's not even better than The Prestige - a movie that I re-watched recently. Is it the best movie of the year so far? No. Kick-Ass and Toy Story 3 were better...in my opinion, anyway.
That being said, Christopher Nolan IS a great filmmaker. Inception IS a great movie. It's smart. It's inventive. It's exciting. Just make sure you don't get caught up in the hype. At the end of the day, Inception is an intellectual film. It pleases the mind, but not the heart. Remember the ending to Toy Story 3? Remember how you felt? Remember that tear you shed? You won't get any of that in Inception. Inception is one of those movie you write a college thesis about and not one you get emotionally invested in. And for me, personally, I need that emotional investment before I start crowning something THE BEST. But...to each their own.
NOTE: I was still HIGH on Toy Story 3 when I wrote that. I apologize.

Christopher Nolan has been building a reputation as an excellent storyteller since his critically acclaimed film Memento, released in 2000. Since then, he has continued to impress with films such as Insomnia and The Prestige. Though he reached new heights with 2005's Batman Begins and 2008's mega-hit The Dark Knight. With such an impressive filmography, expectations for Nolan's newest film, Inception, are quite high. Does the film live up to these expectations. The short answer is, yes.
To fully describe Inception would be difficult. But at it's most basic, the film deals with a group of people who create a dream world for individuals and then break into that dream to steal ideas. There is a lot more to it then that, but that's all I will say. Inception doesn't just deal with dreams, but also dreams with in dreams, and sometimes it goes even deeper. With so much going on, Nolan takes a risk in hoping the audience won't become too lost. But with his direction, as well as the superb writing and editing, you never feel completely lost. When you do feel confused, you know you're in good hands with Nolan. The cast here is also excellent. Every single actor and actress here delivers a great performance and all the characters are likeable and interesting. These are people that you root for, and you want to see them succeed. Another thing this film delivers is action. Even if you become confused or for some reason are not interested by the plot, the action sequences alone are worth the price of admission. The action scenes are all top notch and are quite thrilling. The thing that truly makes them exciting though is the characters. When they are in danger, you truly do care and you want them to make it through the film. The visuals in here are also quite stunning. If you've seen the trailers, you've seen various images such as Paris folding in on itself. All these effects are convincing and breath taking. There's one scene especially that takes advantage of the stunning visuals and makes a great action scene. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen the film, but I'll just say it involves a fight in a hallway. Despite the fact that I've praised the visuals and action so much, it truly is the story that makes Inception so special.
I've heard various people say they did not feel any emotional attachment to the film. I personally don't understand this whatsoever. The relationship between Leonardo Dicaprio and Marion Cotillard's characters made for some heavy drama and was extremely emotional. Their relationship is actually very interesting and provides several twists throughout. Another emotional relationship is the one between Cillian Murphy's character and his father. This relationship isn't given a lot of screen time, but is surprisingly powerful and moving. Both of these have great payoffs. Inception may not pull at the heart strings the same way Toy Story 3 did, but it's a powerful film all the same.
Final Thoughts. Inception is a masterpiece. Two years ago, The Dark Knight reminded audiences summer films can be more then just explosions and gun fire. They reminded audiences they can be thoughtful, engaging, and powerful. Christopher Nolan does that again with Inception. Whether you want to see a compelling and original story with interesting characters, or you just want to see people shoot at each other and for s*** to blow up, Inception is the movie to see.

Whew, definitely need to let it sink in a while. While I haven't read any reviews, one thing I did like was how Nolan didn't let the whole concept of 'dreaming' get away with him, meaning that it didn't get way too fantastical or over the top. However, I sat there for a while wondering how this movie isn't being compared to the Matrix in a number of ways, or maybe it is, I dunno. While I don't think Nolan is a great character writer, he knows how to make an entertaining flick. That said though, I find it kinda funny that I thought the action scenes were pretty cool but at the same time not very necessary. This could have been just as interesting and intriguing without the shootem up, which thankfully didn't bog down the movie too much.
Is this as entertaining as the Dark Knight? Probably not, but it's certainly more interesting. This one right now is hard to rate since I just watched it. While it's not the best movie I've ever seen, it's certainly in my top 3 this year....despite the fact I've only seen 3 movies this year. It's defintely a movie you could watch again, but I don't think I want to. I dunno how that would translate on the letter grading scale, thinking it was good but not fantastic.
