I have seen a grand total of one of those. Same here, The Irishman, and I think that means we don't suffer from "sure, I'll watch it because it's right here" syndrome. Looking at what cracks the Top 10 in the country lists is pretty eye-opening.

Those are based on views in the first four weeks, not the lifetime of the film.

I have seen a grand total of one of those. I've seen three, and started watching 2 more. Do not plan on finishing them.

I remember having this philosophical argument with Tornado back in the day but I think I'm (maybe both of us are) at an age and place in life where time is often a valuable commodity and if I'm going to watch a movie I don't want it to be a time waster. Not saying that every movie needs to be Wild Strawberries and there are plenty of fun movies that I'll happily indulge in but my tolerance for 'turning my brain off' is near bottom. When you're in your teens or twenties and watch a shitty movie you brush it off. When you watch a shitty movie in your thirties or forties you get pissed.

That's a good point. The idea of turning your brain off always bugs me. Movies can be fun, sometimes insanely fun, without being stupid.

I love action films that are designed for pure entertainment, but when I can seek out something like John Wick why the fuck would I sit through a 2+ hour Michael Bay film that's soulless and will just be painful to get through? Yeah, I watch crap too, but I can't really bring myself to watch a lot of what Netflix puts out. It just reeks of assembly line and pandering to the most insipid tastes of the masses. When it's content made by serious filmmakers, like The Irishman or Roma or Da 5 Bloods, that's different. But, no, I don't want to watch Birdbox. It's a shitty movie that only got views because it was there and people ate it up. If that movie had come out in theaters no one would've seen it.

The issue is that a lot of people are cord cutters and have settled for Netflix and Hulu, and if you wanna watch movies, those are pretty lousy platforms. For a lot of people, a shitty Michael Bay movie is the best they can do. It's like back in the day not having cable and having to rely on local TV stations. "Oh, they're showing Earth Girls Are Easy? I guess it's that or nothing."

He doesn't mean Playing with Fire. He means Jexi. I had a blast watching Jexi. It was so phenomenally unfunny that I couldn't help but laugh at what a miscalculation it was.

SnoBorderZeroIs there a way to prevent all these fractured streaming services from turning into a new version of cable?Interesting point. I fear that it is going that way. Paramount Plus - which is launching in a few weeks - is basically just a cable service delivered in a new way.

I think Dracula was talking about this in another thread but a lot of people are starting to play that game where they subscribe to one of the streaming services for a month, plow through everything they want to see, then cancel and go onto another streaming app and do the same thing, going from app to app so they aren't paying for all of them at once. It's not a bad way to go while saving a couple of bucks and if all these apps think that they can show up and compete amongst themselves with people happy to pay for 19 different services then you're going to see a lot more Crackles and Quibis.

I meant to do this. And if I was single I would probably have stuck with it.

It's becoming a harder trick to pull off. Like I'm probably going to have to give in and stay subscribed to Disney+ if they really are going to put out the quantity of Star Wars and Marvel material that they're promising.
