Calling this, don't see it turning around. Swing Time (0-5) and Yankee Doodle Dandy (1-5) are both out.
3 vacancies, 12 movies to go. I see 2, max 3 vacancies coming (likely 1).
How do you guys want to do the last votes? Vote now on open vacancies and again at end, or once all at the end?

Might be good to fill the three vacancies now and have a better idea of where we all stand for the next vote.

I kinda like the idea of finishing it out then voting. But either way is fine with me.

I wouldn't mind holding off on the remaining votes until after we've gone through the remaining movies.

This pairing brought to you by movies featuring somewhat dirty cops portrayed as heroes:
Director: Norman Jewison Written by Stirling Silliphant , John Ball Starring: Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls Does not appear on 1998's AFI Top 100
African-American Philadelphia police detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) is arrested on suspicion of murder by Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger), the racist police chief of tiny Sparta, Mississippi. After Tibbs proves not only his own innocence but that of another man, he joins forces with Gillespie to track down the real killer. Their investigation takes them through every social level of the town, with Tibbs making enemies as well as unlikely friends as he hunts for the truth.
Trivia: Set in a hot Mississippi summer, but filmed during autumn in Illinois, many of the actors had to keep ice chips in their mouths (and spit them out before takes) to prevent their breath from appearing on camera during the night scenes.
Directed by: William Friedkin Written by: Ernest Tidyman , Based on the book by Robin Moore Starring: Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider Genre: Crime
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #70 on 1998's AFI Top 100
New York Detective "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) and his partner (Roy Scheider) chase a French heroin smuggler.
Trivia: The principal car chase scene was widely considered to be the best ever put on film at the time, overtaking Bullitt (1968) for that honor. William Friedkin later attempted to outdo himself with a chase sequence in To Live and Die in L.A. (1985).
My Votes:
In the Heat of the Night: Keep. A nice procedural about racism, without being preachy. I'd prefer Guess Who's Coming to Dinner for Poitier, but don't think you'll vote that on. The French Connection: Cut. We'll get our Hackman fix with Unforgiven. Great car chase, but overall it feels fairly superficial. The score is pretty dope though.

Cut Heat of the Night. It's a cool historical landmark but the actual filmmaking is just above average and the central mystery is not overly interesting.
Keep The French Connection.

Cut both. Good movies, though not really Top 100 worthy. Although it has been a while since I last saw The French Connection.

Definitely keep The French Connection.
I'm torn on In the Heat of the Night. It's definitely flawed and falls into some of the white liberalism that marks much of Poitier's work, but it's also a lot bolder than what most of Hollywood was doing in regards to race at that time. It's close but I'll say keep.

Guys, French Connection is really awesome. It's more than just a great car chase, but a deeply influential police procedural that took a gritty look at crime and policing in New York before it was a cliche. Gene Hackman's performance is an amazing example of defining a character with limited characterization. The movie never tells us that much about Popeye Doyle, yet we know him so well. Also, the film does an amazing job of lulling the viewer into the story. We buy so deeply into Popeye Doyle's obsessive hunt that the ending hits us twice as hard because we suddenly realize just how far Popeye (and the audience) have fallen.
Also, have you seen that car chase? Holy shit is it fucking rad.

This pairing brought to you by thrillers featuring murderers:
Director: Alfred Hitchcock Written by Joseph Stefano , Robert Bloch Starring: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh Genre: Mystery, Thriller
#18 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Phoenix secretary Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), on the lam after stealing $40,000 from her employer in order to run away with her boyfriend, Sam Loomis (John Gavin), is overcome by exhaustion during a heavy rainstorm. Traveling on the back roads to avoid the police, she stops for the night at the ramshackle Bates Motel and meets the polite but highly strung proprietor Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), a young man with an interest in taxidermy and a difficult relationship with his mother.
Trivia: Every theater that showed this movie had a cardboard cut-out installed in the lobby of Sir Alfred Hitchcock pointing to his wristwatch with a note saying "The manager of this theatre has been instructed at the risk of his life, not to admit to the theatre any persons after the picture starts. Any spurious attempts to enter by side doors, fire escapes or ventilating shafts will be met by force. The entire objective of this extraordinary policy, of course, is to help you enjoy PSYCHO more. Alfred Hitchcock"
Directed by: Jonathan Demme Written by: Ted Tally Based on the novel by Thomas Harris Starring: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn Genre: Thriller
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #65 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI's training academy. Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into a case and that Starling, as an attractive young woman, may be just the bait to draw him out.
Trivia: Jodie Foster claims that during the first meeting between Lecter and Starling, Sir Anthony Hopkins's mocking of her southern accent was improvised on the spot. Foster's horrified reaction was genuine since she felt personally attacked. She later thanked Hopkins for generating such an honest reaction.
My Votes: Psycho: Keep. The back half of this is a drag and doesn't quite live up to the first. The ending psychiatrist speech is some of the worst stuff Hitchcock has ever filmed. But that first half and that last shot are so so damn good. Silence of the Lambs: Keep. The camera work ratchets up the unsettling nature of the film. When you're in Clarice's shoes you are always put off a bit, or you can feel how little she feels at the FBI.

As a side note, there's a chance that PhantomKnight and I broke Google forms. If his same issues recur here, would people have access to send me their list in excel, or should I pursue a course of us ranking our bottom (or top 10-25) until the Google Form is un-fucked?

Gonna take some formatting on the back end but if everyone posts as their number, a period, and two spaces we can get it going.
