If I were to put one argument in favor of North By Northwest out there, it seems to me that a list representing the best of American cinema with a movie like Raiders of the Lost Ark on it but not North By Northwest is a tragedy. The film is legit one of the best escapist thrillers ever made.

One of the most revered comedies of the silent era, this film finds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnny's fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton's boundless wit and dexterity.
As usual, Buster Keaton does all his own stunts in this film, a lot of which is obviously quite dangerous. One in particular is when he has to throw the railroad tie to hit another to knock if off the track. If he had missed, the locomotive could have derailed and killed him.

Salvatore "Sal" Fragione (Danny Aiello) is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighborhood local, Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito), becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria's Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin' Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin' Out and to other people in the neighborhood, and tensions rise.
Trivia: There are 74 musical artists cited by name during Love Daddy's "roll call." The first is Boogie Down Productions and the last is Marion Williams.
My Votes:
The General: Keep. Sherlock Jr. is great sure, but its 45 minutes and I don't see it being added. I'm fine with this being on for Keaton representation. Do the Right Thing: Keep. No brainer. Not only as a voice for black filmmakers, but for independent movies on the list |

Trivia: All of the Bolivia scenes were filmed in Mexico, where almost the entire cast and crew, and director George Roy Hill, came down with Montezuma's Revenge (severe diarrhea caused by drinking Mexico's notoriously polluted water). Only Robert Redford, Paul Newman, and Katharine Ross were spared, because they refused to drink the water catered on the set, and stuck to drinking soda and alcohol for the duration of the shoot.

With the help of a mysterious source, code-named Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), the two reporters make a connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. Despite dire warnings about their safety, the duo follows the money all the way to the top.
Trivia: The two lead actors memorized each other's lines so that they could interrupt each other in character. This unsettled a lot of the actors they were playing opposite, leading to a greater sense of authenticity.
My Votes:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: Cut. I think there's better New Hollywood era films on the list, and better films addressing this time period. All the President's Men: Keep. I like having political thrillers on the list, and I'm not really sure what else people would support.
