Going to make my case for Stagecoach: The importance of this movie on the western genre is incalculable. Before this westerns were pretty much strictly B-movie fare often involving singing cowboys but Stagecoach in many ways legitimized the genre and essentially pioneered the adult action movie as we know it. It was also the film that solidified John Wayne as a star and created that John Ford/John Wayne/Monument Valley combo that would be prevalent in cinema for the next thirty years or so. From a pure filmmaking perspective the film was in many ways innovative. Orson Welles is said to have watched it forty times before making Citizen Kane and has some really next level stuntwork. We've voted out Shane, there's room for a replacement western and we voted out Grapes of Wrath so there's room for a new John Ford film, let's make it happen.

What's the argument for L.A. Confidential exactly? It's very well made and is a fine viewing experience but over time its importance has kind of diminished for me. It lives in the shadow of actual noirs, and the many neo-noirs that came before it and I'm not sure that it really brings anything all that new to the table or has influenced cinema in any lasting way. Also Russell Crowe being alive at the end is stupid. Great movie, don't get me wrong, but top 100? Not so sure about that.
I'm not dead set on blocking it or anything but the other two movies that are currently tied for second seem to have better arguments in my eyes (a landmark horror film and the continuing influence of Wes Anderson).

I don't have an intellectual silver bullet argument as to why it needs to be here, I just think it's an immaculately made movie with a fantastic script, amazing performances, and subtle direction. It's populist Hollywood filmmaking at its best. Not a movie that's gonna change the world exactly, but a meaty story told with style. I'd also argue it's one of the best examples of classic Hollywood filmmaking made post-1970s. I'd also argue that it improves somewhat on the classic film noirs in that, unlike The Big Sleep or Out of the Past, the convoluted mystery actually holds up under scrutiny when you put it all together.

We have Stagecoach at first, and Exorcist/Tenenbaums/Confidential/Roger Rabbit/Heat all tied at second, which puts us two over 102 with 30 left to vote on.
I'm letting all of them in, and will adjust the timing of the voting rounds as necessary. If we have more than 100 at the end, then we will vote on the overage with the worst falling off.
Next set up shortly.

This pairing brought to you by randomization:
Director: Mike Nichols Written by Calder Willingham , Buck Henry Starring: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #7 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) has just finished college and, back at his parents' house, he's trying to avoid the one question everyone keeps asking: What does he want to do with his life? An unexpected diversion crops up when he is seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), a bored housewife and friend of his parents. But what begins as a fun tryst turns complicated when Benjamin falls for the one woman Mrs. Robinson demanded he stay away from, her daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross).
Trivia: Robert Redford screen tested with Candice Bergen for the part of Benjamin Braddock, but he was finally rejected by Director Mike Nichols. Nichols did not believe Redford could persuasively project the underdog qualities necessary to the role. When he told this to Redford, Redford asked Nichols what he meant. "Well, let's put it this way", said Nichols, "Have you ever struck out with a girl?" "What do you mean?" asked Redford. "That's precisely my point," said Nichols. Redford told Nichols that he perfectly understood the character of Benjamin, who was a social misfit. He went on and on about his ability to play the part. Nichols finally said to him, "Bob, look in the mirror. Can you honestly imagine a guy like you having difficulty seducing a woman?"
Director: George Cukor Written by Donal Ogden Stewart , Philip Barry Starring: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart Genre: Comedy, Romance
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #13 on 1998's AFI Top 100
This classic romantic comedy focuses on Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn), a Philadelphia socialite who has split from her husband, C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), due both to his drinking and to her overly demanding nature. As Tracy prepares to wed the wealthy George Kittredge (John Howard), she crosses paths with both Dexter and prying reporter Macaulay Connor (James Stewart). Unclear about her feelings for all three men, Tracy must decide whom she truly loves.
Trivia: This film has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 58 critic reviews.
My Votes:The Graduate: Keep The Philadelphia Story: Cut. All the merits of the film you'd get out of the play. The performances are good, yes, but I don't think this sits in my 100.

Damn, it’s been such a long time since I watched Philadelphia Story I hardly remember it. I’ll vote keep and if it’s truly unworthy I trust my fellow CSers to vote accordingly.
