The Graduate: Keep
The Philadelphia Story: Cut
For me, Philadelphia Story is along the same lines as African Queen. Don't get why critics continue to hold these movies in such high regard.

Keep the Graduate so that we have context for the ending of Wayne's World 2 when it inevitably makes the cut.

Keep the Graduate so that we have context for the ending of Wayne's World 2 when it inevitably makes the cut. And that episode of Simpsons where Homer's dad dates Marge's mom.

This pairing brought to you by silent movies:
Director: Charlie Chaplin Written by Charlie Chaplin Starring: Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard Genre: Silent Comedy
#81 on 1998's AFI Top 100
This comedic masterpiece finds the iconic Little Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) employed at a state-of-the-art factory where the inescapable machinery completely overwhelms him, and where various mishaps keep getting him sent to prison. In between his various jail stints, he meets and befriends an orphan girl (Paulette Goddard). Both together and apart, they try to contend with the difficulties of modern life, with the Tramp working as a waiter and eventually a performer.
Trivia: Another inspiration for the film was a conversation that Charles Chaplin had with Mohandas K. Gandhi, who complained about how machines were taking over. Chaplin told Gandhi, "I grant that machinery with only the consideration of profit has thrown men out of work and created a great deal of misery, but to use it as a service to humanity ... should be a help and benefit to mankind." But as they discussed it, Chaplin came to realize it was the first part of his statement-machinery that only considers profits has created a great deal of misery-that mattered most. Gandhi had convinced him without even trying.
Director: F.W. Murnau Written by Carl Mayer Starring: George O'Brien, Janet Gaynor Genre: Drama, Romance
Does not appear on 1998's AFI Top 100
Bored with his wife (Janet Gaynor), their baby and the dull routine of farm life, a farmer (George O'Brien) falls under the spell of a flirtatious city girl (Margaret Livingston) who convinces him to drown his wife so they can escape together. When his wife becomes suspicious of his plan and runs away to the city, the farmer pursues her, slowly regaining her trust as the two rediscover their love for each other in this award-winning silent classic.
Trivia: This film was selected into the National Film Registry in 1989 (the first year of inductions) for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
My Votes:
Modern Times: Keep . I've made my feelings on this one clear earlier, but i view it as Chaplin's master work. A truly prescient movie, and innovative to boot. Sunrise: Keep. Aside from Night of the Hunter that we voted in, this would be the only expressionist work on the list.

Modern Times: Keep
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans: Keep
These are both bonafide masterpieces (possibly even the best films in their respective decades, aside from Rules of the Game for the 1930s) and slam-dunks to stay.

This pairing brought to you by musicals:
Director: Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen Written by Betty Comden , Adolph Green Starring: Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds Genre: Musical
#10 on 1998's AFI Top 100
When the transition is being made from silent films to `talkies', everyone has trouble adapting. Don and Lina have been cast repeatedly as a romantic couple, but when their latest film is remade into a musical, only Don has the voice for the new singing part. After a lot of practise with a diction coach, Lina still sounds terrible, and Kathy, a bright young aspiring actress, is hired to record over her voice.
Trivia: Donald O'Connor recalled, "I was smoking four packs of cigarettes a day then, and getting up those walls was murder. They had to bank one wall so I could make it up and then through another wall. We filmed that whole sequence in one day. We did it on a concrete floor. My body just had to absorb this tremendous shock. Things were building to such a crescendo that I thought I'd have to commit suicide for the ending. I came back on the set three days later. All the grips applauded. Gene Kelly applauded, told me what a great number it was. Then Gene said, "Do you think you could do that number again?" I said, "Sure, any time". He said, "Well, we're going to have to do it again tomorrow". No one had checked the aperture of the camera and they fogged out all the film. So the next day I did it again! By the end my feet and ankles were a mass of bruises."
Director: Robert Wise Written by George Hurdalek , Howard Lindsay Starring: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer Genre: Drama, Romance
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #55 on 1998's AFI Top 100
A tuneful, heartwarming story, it is based on the real life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world's best-known concert groups in the era immediately preceding World War II. Julie Andrews plays the role of Maria, the tomboyish postulant at an Austrian abbey who becomes a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain with seven children, and brings a new love of life and music into the home.
Trivia: Christopher Plummer intensely disliked working on this movie. He's been known to refer to it as "The Sound of Mucus" or "S&M" and likened working with Dame Julie Andrews to "being hit over the head with a big Valentine's Day card, every day." Nontheless, he and Andrews have remained close friends ever since. Andrews claimed that Plummer's cynicism probably helped his performance and this movie, keeping it from being too sentimental.
My Votes: Singin' in the Rain: Keep . Stone cold classic, Gene Kelly is magnetic, and the wall dancing scene rules. Sound of Music: Cut. It's three hours long, but you barely know any of the characters. Its just moving from point to point. The movie loses major steam after Plummer and Andrews marry. Sure the songs are memorable, but there's better musicals not in the 100 that should be in over this.
